There are things I feel like I *have* to write about, and things I *get* to write about. This is a “get to write about” piece.

I grew up thinking that Nazism and fascism had been defeated and disgraced once and for all. It’s been difficult to face the growing evidence that they are perennial temptations to which some percentage of the population will keep returning, and that the fight against it must continue indefinitely.

The SCOTUS ruling in favor of resuming deportations of migrants to unknown countries is an abomination. As Pope Francis often said: “Migrants are not pawns of the chessboard of humanity; they are people with stories who deserve our love and care.”

One of Dreyer’s favorite moves, because he’s so good at it, is a sly allusion to some fleeting headline that makes you feel clever or in the know for getting the reference. Here he brilliantly weaves in a landmark cultural reference that will make us clever readers doubly pleased with ourselves.

The irreparable harm and trampled rights suffered by individuals and families just trying to live their lives in peace is a small price to pay to avoid even a provisional check on what may or may not eventually be deemed unconstitutional executive actions

Please enjoy ten gorgeous Calvin & Hobbes Sunday strips from 1992 to 1995, when Bill Watterson was free to draw it any way he wanted—along with my long-winded commentary on the syndicate-mandated limitations on his prior work, how he exploited his later freedom, and why his work generally is great.

In this piece, I look at how Watterson wrestled with, and chafed under, the restrictions of the traditional three-tier Sunday strip format, which necessarily limited what he could achieve—and how the power and scope of his work exploded when that restriction was removed.

Variety didn't take heed of the AP guidance, I suppose. So let me restate: AI cannot "be an actor." Nor can it love anything. It can proffer those words but only as a thin veneer, in turn commodifying those vital concepts
