It's good to see the Prime Minister sharing our commitment to fixing social care once and for all. But he must not wait any longer to act. We urge him to get a date in for further cross-party talks immediately. This is the only way to fix social care for the long term. @EdDavey.LibDems.org.uk

Putin's bombs are killing Ukrainian civilians, and Donald Trump is funding them by buying Russian diesel. The UK must stand up and call this what it is: another Trump betrayal of the Ukrainian people and European security.

V. interesting re FoM. Major Rejoin focus on money coming back into the UK to try to offset the budget concerns and while making a positive case for the Euro, also emphasis on the ability to delay doing so?

Nigel Farage was always clear that everything about Brexit would be a success, even based on zero evidence. He advocated for every aspect of it. The least UK joiners need to do is to argue *for Europe*. And guess what, you also have the fact that it's good on your side 1

This Ipsos poll is really interesting. 4 years ago, only 29% of Brits thought that GB-EU interests were aligned. Today that figure has climbed to 43% GB-US aligned interests are going in the opposite direction.

I feel sure it would not be seen legitimate, nor effective (in terms of credibility in UK-EU negotiations + sustainability) to propose to join the EU without a referendum, relying on a party manifesto. It takes a referendum to reverse a referendum: the main reason to avoid it is fear of defeat.

Instead of arguing about what happened 10 years ago, perhaps the British debate should focus on 1) the very real threat emanating from Russia NOW, including but not limited to disinformation 2) Britain‘s future strategy in a geopolitically turbulent world which makes Brexit look even more absurd

Gah. Stop this nonsense. FOM is a benefit. Stop framing it as a negative. Also, FOM is one of the four freedoms. Without it, you can’t be in the EU and can’t even be in the single market. This isn’t difficult.

I wonder if doing that risks the whole debate being framed around immigration from day one? Maybe there's a case for building all the other positives first and then extolling the virtues of FoM? And,thinking about who we're seeking to persuade, emphasising the breaks we could apply if needs be.

It has, of course, been a "media age" throughout his tenure, and despite his obvious shortcomings we've 71 MP's and idk how many more councillors. Maybe there's something to be said for having a leader who flies under the radar?

Idk but I do know that the criticisms we're seeing now are very similar to those we saw pre GE 24. The only difference now is instead of our critics claiming we were going to lose badly in that GE, this time the criticism seems to be founded on we ought to be winning more than we are.

Agreed that was cringe but presumably they think it'll play better in the seats they want to hold and win. They've been very clear about what they want to achieve in 2029 and if they succeed in taking another 50+ seats off the Cons not sure too many of their current critics are going to complain.

It's also an example of what we need to do to win this thing. Look at who we need to win over, and pitch arguments in a way that will resonate with them.

This is both due to Leave voters changing their minds as Brexit has disappointed (Leave to Remain switching much more common than opposite), and due to demographic drift - Leave voters were old, more of them have died. Young ppl joining electorate skew heavily Remain.

Agreed. Seems to me there's scope within the EU rules which would allow us to defer this. If doing that helps win the referendum, and I suspect it'll prove a more successful argument than making the economic case, I've no problem with that.

I don't disagree with a lot of this but "sailing under the radar" hasn't been a disastrous strategy in electoral terms. Even his critics accept he could lead us to over 100 in 2029, yet this is now seen as a sign of weak leadership because it's not enough. That's quite the dial shift from 2019.

Not true. See Ian Dunt's article on this very subject from a fortnight ago. He's very pro changing but even he concedes the LD's have done well under ED's leadership and are likely to continue doing well even if we don't change leader.

The reality is that there's no obligation to join straightaway or even in a fixed time period. Saying so does not preclude making a positive case as well but it might just persuade some who have an emotional tie to £ not to oppose rejoin. Those who want the euro have first to win the referendum.

Perhaps it ought to be the biggest attraction but I'd be very surprised if being able to "kick it into the long grass" doesn't prove to be a better strategy. If making the economic case for EU membership was a winner we wouldn't be in this mess in the first place.😉

Being pro-the UK joining the EU and being pro-EU are not the same thing. The challenge for UK leaders is to turn the former shallow preference of the population into the latter deeper sentiment & belief. Then the UK can convince the rest of Europe that it would be a force for the good of the EU.
