There’s sometimes a sense that if you’re researching the effects of LLMs or Diffusion Models on culture or the user then you are condoning their use and naturalizing it: I would like to remind you that scholars also study the cultural effects of crack and STDs.

The new chatbot-first search. Same blank results section for "ignore", but will create a filter for any added terms.
Screenshot of a google search for the word "ignore". Results section is blank except for "Understood. How else can I help you today."Screenshot of a Google search for "ignore Greek". Results read: "Got it-no Greek text or language references will be used. How can I help you today? Let me know what you'd like to work on, look up, or explore."

I'm suing Grammarly over its paid AI feature that presented editing suggestions as if they came from me - and many other writers and journalists - without consent. State law requires consent before someone's name can be used for commercial purposes. www.wired.com/story/gramma...

New from 404 Media: police have unwittingly unmasked millions of their surveillance targets because of a Flock redaction error. Police didn't redact specific license plates in public record releases. A site is now making that information searchable, 2.3 million plates www.404media.co/police-unmas...

Who are the experts / journalists / researchers you turn to for critical perspectives on AI & the tech world? I created a feed of experts who watch AI developments with a skeptical & critical (but *informed*) POV. I'd love more people to follow it, but I'm also looking to add people - recs welcome!

Reports of active shooter at Brown University. HOWEVER, news is VERY unreliable rn. Officials mistakenly announced a shooter was in custody. It was wrong; but, that was the headline on TV news stations across the country and CNN too. Stay skeptical for a while, including about casualties.

Good thread on the need to separate corporate myths and fictional stories about AI in education from the messy and often problematic realities of how AI actually works in classrooms. We need clarity on claims vs. cost and labor, who benefits, and who gets to decide.

You can never bend the knee enough to appease an authoritarian bully. This is a devastating blow to academic freedom & freedom of speech at Columbia. Never in the history of this nation has there been an administration so intent on the utter destruction of higher education as we know it.

Not surprising of course. So much to unpack here. But I am not at all convinced that teachers are 'in the driver's seat', as posted by OpenAI, especially AI-critical folks who will feel additional external pressure to use corporate AI tools for accelerated or 'optimized' course design.

Trump announced its AI Action plan for American AI dominance. What we really need is a People's AI Action plan to ensure Trump + Silicon Valley don't weaponize AI against working people, exacerbate the climate crisis and fortify the surveillance state. Proud to have signed on and endorsed this call

I’ve noticed an uptick in dismissals of the concerns of teachers about AI. Some say that it’s *their* job to find a way to evaluate work that AI can’t replicate. I would just ask that you talk to real teachers and really listen. I’d also suggest reading a bit about writing and the brain.
