Could Dubliners Do Their Big Shops on Foot Instead of by Car? - Dublin Inquirer
If the city is to push for people to cut short journeys by car, to meet climate goals, then the weekly shop could be one car trip to look at eliminating – but how?

About a dozen stencils on a floor with various messages - ranging from a pollution focus to messages about how often DCC clear gullies. 3 students standing on Thomas Street in Dublin looking at a stencil that they've added which reads "Dublin City Council cleans 150 gullies per day in our city".

The various towns around Lake Garda in Italy use small metal disc markers to indicate the boundary up to which commercial businesses can place various items of furniture onto the public street.
Photo of a shop with shelving placed onto the public street. The shelves contain various shoes. Arrows marked onto the photo indicate where the small discs are - with the commercial shelving all behind this invisible line. Closer photo showing two discs set into the footpath. Shelving with footwear sits behind these. Close up of a metal disc. It reads "COMMUNE GARDA".

The various towns around Lake Garda in Italy have various forms of signage on their drainage gullies - typically conveying a message along the lines of "the lake starts with this gulley, don't pollute into it".
Small street with gulley in the foreground with a blue metal sign adjoining which reads "the lake starts here" A different gulley. The signage is affixed to the gulley cover this time. It reads "No trash. The lake starts here."Photo of footpath - mix of paving and cobble.

The gulley has an adjoining square tile set into the footpath.

It shows lemons (it's from the town of Limon) and reads "do not throw cigarette butts on the ground".

Some aspects we will need to figure out from trialling and iterating. #PlayStreetsBETA - What they are like on the street - size, appearance, feeling. - How people driving, cycling and scooting interact with them. - How well the hardware items work in practice. - How children interact with them.

Zara and Dave from the City Council's Joinery Workshop making a prototype for an upcoming #PlayStreetsBETA trial. It's a planter box, which also incorporates a swing gate. The idea is to use these to 'bookend' an onstreet play space, with the gates closing across the roadway during certain times.
A photo of a bright modern workshop with a high ceiling. The building's steel structure is painted bright yellow and the roof contains rooflights and artificial lighting.

Thanks. Positive reframing like that might also help in other ways - such as linking with the increased spend by people on foot ("pedestrian pound"). And might help rethink "delays" - not just wait times, but also walking slower due to narrow busy footpaths, uneven walking surface, obstacles, etc.

Hi Ian, thoughts on expressing it in the opposite way? A person has a 15min city available to them today under the *existing* circumstances. Each time we remove delays we expand their personal 15min city: 1min - 14% 2min - 28% 3min - 44% 4min - 60% 5min - 78% 6min - approx doubled in size
