The amount of Amazon workers relying on SNAP and Medicaid has nearly tripled since 2020. — while Amazon’s annual profits soared by over 550%. It’s the same story everywhere: corporate profits are at record highs, while workers’ share of the economy is at a record low. We must unrig the system.

Why is Boozman acting like he didn't help draft the bill that cut SNAP and put states in these impossible positions? @politico.com it would be nice if you did some follow-up (it used to be known as journalism)
“We've come up with a good plan,” committee Chair John Boozman (R-Ark.) said in an interview Thursday. “And I would really hate for us to put our states in a situation where they come away with nothing, and I think that'll be very difficult for them.”

Democrats’ frustration — and the broader breakdown in the traditional agriculture policy coalition — stems directly from both parties advancing their farm bill priorities through the reconciliation process in recent years.

Republicans already used their domestic policy megabill to pass the most politically valuable policies that are normally part of the farm bill last summer, leaving policy updates without a clear path to become law.

This year's leftover farm bill docket includes a collection of consequential but less urgent policies, such as updates to outdated farm lending limits and changes to major USDA programs. Lawmakers need to pass a new authorization or another extension of the 2018 version of the bill before the end of the year."- from Politico

The thing liberals fundamentally don't understand is that trans people are losing rights they already had. We're not asking for more, we're asking not to lose what we already had for decades. Most sports leagues and the Olympics had inclusion criteria for decades without issue.
Screenshot of an X (formerly Twitter) exchange discussing political pragmatism and the Overton window.
The initial post by onion person (@CantEverDie) reads:
> "doesn't matter, this is about what the right is able to push with the overton window. first its democrats needing to disavow trans women in sports to get elected, next it'll be agreeing to ban access to HRT to get elected. we've seen how this plays out"
>
A reply from Nick Pappas (@NickAPappas) reads:
> "Are you insane? The Overton window didn’t even include this discussion until recently. The public has never been in favor of desegregating the sports by sex.
> Personally I’m glad Barack Obama ran against gay marriage in 2008. Not because that was the right position, or one he even actually held, but because he knew the public wasn’t with him on it. If he hadn’t won he wouldn’t have been able to appoint 2 of the justices who ultimately voted in the majority for Obergefell.
> Lincoln in 1860 didn’t even run on abolishing slavery! He just wanted to stop its expansion. And thankfully he did that and won because a more extreme and morally correct position would have lost. As a result he was able to win the Civil War and push through the 13 amendment.

The wealthy really hate the poor and feel so emboldened, they are relishing that less people can afford to eat. Completely out of touch and a sentiment that will only lead to resentment boiling over soon enough
Sorry to be the bearer of good news in these ill-tempered times, but fewer Americans are using food stamps. The main reason is that Congress’s reforms last year are causing states to police the rolls for abuse as they should have long ago.

Target paid its CEO $21.8M last year — 794x the median Target worker's pay of $27,506. Target has also spent $13.9B on stock buybacks since 2019, while remaining among the largest employers of Medicaid and SNAP recipients in America. This is what I mean by a rigged economy.

What is this, the USSR?
Rollins and RFK Jr. huddle with grocers to discuss food price policies

By Grace Yarrow

08/24/2026 05:41 PM EDT

Top Trump administration officials privately huddled with grocers on Monday to discuss policy changes and other voluntary moves that could lower food prices, according to two people familiar with the meeting.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. met with representatives from top grocery-store companies at USDA headquarters, according to people who were granted anonymity to discuss the closed-door gathering. Attendees represented Walmart, Whole Foods, Albertsons (Safeway), Piggly Wiggly and Giant Eagle.

Monday's meeting was designed to brainstorm regulatory actions the administration could take in the short term to lower grocers' labor and overhead costs — as food affordability is top of mind for families ahead of November's midterm elections.

The roundtable discussion occurred as Republicans and Trump officials seek to pull all available policy levers to lower food costs, an effort that includes President Donald Trump's announcement on Friday that the U.S. will attempt to lower ground beef prices by temporarily increasing beef imports. That move has angered ranchers and some Republicans.

Some of the grocery companies that took part in the Monday meeting have already voluntarily reduced food prices at Trump's urging. The grocers did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Yikes. Women accounted for all of the job losses and all of the labor force decline in July, according to @nwlc.org
WASHINGTON — Women accounted for 100 percent of the decline in the labor force in July, according to a National Women’s Law Center jobs analysis of monthly data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That brings the total net number of women who have left the labor force since January this year to 845,000. In comparison, there are 406,000 fewer men in the labor force now than in January.

A total of 165,000 women, aged 20 and over, left the labor force last month — meaning they are neither working nor looking for work — while men's labor force participation was unchanged. Overall, the economy lost 23,000 jobs in July. Women accounted for all of these losses, losing 32,000 jobs, while men gained 9,000 jobs. Women make up 50.1% of the workforce.

Grocery margins are low is a frequently rehashed point to argue against Mamdani’s public grocery stores. Grocery is indeed a low margin business. But its median return on invested capital is above that for all firms, so it is NOT a low profitability business. Let me explain. 🧵
