This reminds me of a recurring question around AI: Who values process vs outcome, when? Do you jam to try sth new, to practice your skills? Or do you race to produce the most finished-looking game? Jams might be framed more explicitly around one of these to help attract those they hope to reach.

Have you also experienced a “paradox of the perfect start” in a university design project? Students skipping ahead to final-looking results, presenting complete apps but struggling to articulate their own ideas, and accidentally excluding team members. Thoughts and ideas in my article below.

Bayreuth Study Reveals Memory Gaps Regarding AI-Generated Content
A research team from the University of Bayreuth has found that users of AI systems can no longer reliably recall after just one week whether content was generated by AI or not.

Fun fact for #CHI2026 folks: The generated "Session Summary Podcasts" in the ACM DL "cite" the session's papers and are picked up by Google Scholar, so all papers get +1 citation automatically now!

Can you remember which ideas & sentences were your own and which were generated with AI? In a controlled study (n=184), we found that AI use significantly reduces the accuracy of content attribution after one week. #CHI2026 preprint & numbers in 🧵 @robinwelsch.bsky.social @svengoller.bsky.social
Illustration showing the study flow overall: Left part shows Phase 1 with a user and chatbot working on ideas and elaborations for the example problem "How might we solve the problem of plastic waste in the ocean?" Text says that participants have to come up with five ideas in 1-3 keywords and write elaborations in one sentence each. An arrow with annotation ("One week later") points to a second illustration of a user with question-marked though bubbles. Text says that in this Phase 2, participants were asked: Did you work on this? Source of idea? Source of elaboration? Further text says that they were also asked this for unseen items (so-called distractors). Following another arrow to the right is a box with the title "Key findings" and three bullets: Negative impact of AI on source memory overall; mixed workflows harder to remember than never/always using AI; and people tend to be overconfident about their own performance.

This is a unique project in several ways: Specialists working with an actual AI writing tool product (not the latest chatbot or own prototype) as part of their actual job, in an important yet overlooked writing domain (German "easy and plain language" for accessibility).

Have we lost peer appreciation? Not just at #CHI2026 I notice many review-to-reject. All studies have tradeoffs, all papers have limited scope. Sure, reviewing is fast, even with "passing knowledge", if we list what isn't there and conclude it's lacking. But we should review what *has* been done.

Three weeks ago, my feed filled with Grammarly ads - and I wondered: What if we took their messages seriously? My anecdotal "ad-vestigation" connects them to Human-AI interaction concepts, leading to counterfactual questions for alternative design directions. medium.com/p/1bab97d0fa98

Well, guess what happened? Despite appreciating the changes, it is difficult to envision what the revised paper would look like, so a fresh round of reviewing is required. 👉 I think we should get rid of rebuttals without resubmissions. #UIST2025

Do you find yourself coding similar stuff again & again to "just run this quick user study"? Florian has invested a lot of time and effort into engineering reusable components for (online) studies in #HCI. We've used & tested it across several recent projects. Now you can, too!👇 #EICS2025

Daniel Buschek @dbuschek.bsky.social · 17/06/2025
For #CHI we can submit a revised version after initial reviews. In contrast, it now feels bad to write a #UIST rebuttal without being able to directly show changes. I wonder if reviewers will feel the same way and if that reduces the chances of seriously engaging with rebuttals. 🤔

Mobile email UIs added AI replies "on top". These popups hide draft & email, so users need to remember all info from the email while prompting & checking AI results. We've redesigned this with local responses, resulting in flexible workflows - both with & without AI. 👇🧵#CHI2025
Two screenshots with annotations. Left: Gmail showing an empty email draft with a popup on top that shows user prompt and AI reply. Right: Redesign that shows manual and AI reply snippets in small cards directly inserted into the text of the incoming email. Additional text says points out this difference in the use of space.
