Thank you #CHI2026 for an amazing week of inspiring conversations in Barcelona!

Can you remember which ideas & sentences were your own and which were generated with AI? In a controlled study (n=184), we found that AI use significantly reduces the accuracy of content attribution after one week. #CHI2026 preprint & numbers in 🧵 @robinwelsch.bsky.social @svengoller.bsky.social
Illustration showing the study flow overall: Left part shows Phase 1 with a user and chatbot working on ideas and elaborations for the example problem "How might we solve the problem of plastic waste in the ocean?" Text says that participants have to come up with five ideas in 1-3 keywords and write elaborations in one sentence each. An arrow with annotation ("One week later") points to a second illustration of a user with question-marked though bubbles. Text says that in this Phase 2, participants were asked: Did you work on this? Source of idea? Source of elaboration? Further text says that they were also asked this for unseen items (so-called distractors). Following another arrow to the right is a box with the title "Key findings" and three bullets: Negative impact of AI on source memory overall; mixed workflows harder to remember than never/always using AI; and people tend to be overconfident about their own performance.

Typical chatbots force co-writers to leave shared docs. Our #CHI2026 paper explores collaborative AI use in shared docs via 3 features: 🤖 Shared agent profiles ☑️ Repeatable tasks, triggered by users or system 💬 Agents respond in shared comments Preprint in 🧵 w @florianlehmann.bsky.social

Is this average based on data or a nudge? 😄 #CHI2026
Screenshot from PCS showing the information on paper length for a "standard paper", saying the average is 7000-8000 words.

Our article on the AI Ghostwriter Effect is the top editor's pick in today's email by #ACM on the rising impact factor of #TOCHI - cool! 🤩 Available here (open access): doi.org/10.1145/3637... @florianlehmann.bsky.social @albrechtschmidt.bsky.social @robinwelsch.bsky.social
Screenshot of ACM Journals announcement: TOCHI impact factor rises from 4.8 to 6.6, ranking top quartile in Cybernetics and Information Systems. Editors’ Pick highlights the 2024 paper The AI Ghostwriter Effect on AI-generated text and authorship."

#CHI2025 preprint: arxiv.org/abs/2502.07629 We also describe a broader design space. Do you have further ideas for touch gestures for LLMs?
Shows two states of the proposed UI. Left: text on a smartphone with points added for two finger touches, indicating a spreading movement. Blue bubbles are added at the end of the text, some containing words, others empty. Right: A later state of this UI, showing an added sentence in one green bubble and a floating widget on the right screen edge with buttons to accept or reject the generated sentence.

As our study (N=126) showed, our design (center) involves users more, also while reading. While full AI replies (bottom) are fast, our design also covers fast workflows: Users can simply skip local responses to get an AI draft, if they situationally prefer speed over control.
Shows time spent on reading/writing in the reply process as a horizontal bar chart. Three bars compare the new “local responses” design against two baselines, namely fully manual typing and full AI reply generation. Colored bar segments and line styles show that the local responses sit inbetween the baselines in terms of total time and allowed participants to spend a higher proportion of time on the reading part, since they could also add local replies while reading.

Inspired by microtasking principles, tap any sentence in the incoming email to write a local reply (or get sentence suggestions). Then connect these local replies on a usual draft screen (or let AI do just that).
Shows two screenshots of the UI. Left: incoming email with two local responses added in card-like UIs inline between the sentences of the original email. Right: AI-suggestion for a whole email based on the entered local replies. Formatted with AI changes highlighted in colour, with buttons for accept/discard below.

Mobile email UIs added AI replies "on top". These popups hide draft & email, so users need to remember all info from the email while prompting & checking AI results. We've redesigned this with local responses, resulting in flexible workflows - both with & without AI. 👇🧵#CHI2025
Two screenshots with annotations. Left: Gmail showing an empty email draft with a popup on top that shows user prompt and AI reply. Right: Redesign that shows manual and AI reply snippets in small cards directly inserted into the text of the incoming email. Additional text says points out this difference in the use of space.
