What some call "unused land" is often the last safe haven for countless living creatures. Wetlands are not empty spaces waiting to be developed. They are nurseries for birds, natural water filters, flood defenses, and wildlife habitats that cannot be replaced once lost.

So, a lot of people ask me why I buy so many books. The truth is, I have a genetic disorder where my body doesn’t produce enough books of its own, so I have to supplement.

And then there were 2. One Owlet fledged from this nest last evening, but there are still 2 hanging out in the safety of the nest at the moment. They are getting braver by the day and I expect at least 1, if not both remaining, to leave today. 🪶

The British Crime Classics are an addiction for me & the gateway drug is their damnably fine cover art! The color design & vintage illustration force my barely resistant, hovering finger to hit "buy" before I've even read the synopsis! Someone stop me--it's a kind of madness!

Pope Leo XIV carried the cross across all fourteen stations for over an hour. The prayers named children who had been “taken away and imprisoned during protests, deported by policies devoid of compassion, shipwrecked on desperate journeys of hope, killed in war zones, and wiped out in death camps.”

From Saddam Hussein’s draining of southern Iraq’s marshes to Russia’s attacks on a Ukrainian dam and nuclear power plant, calls are increasing to recognize mass environmental harms as international crimes. @leilasadat1.bsky.social outlines a role for the proposed #CrimesAgainstHumanity treaty:

"Summer, 1917" is my favorite painting of Cornish artist, Harold Harvey (1874-1941). Seeing it brings to mind the Henry James quote: "“Summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language."

People are NOT understanding what empty cargo ships from China means. It means no work for dock workers. No work for truck drivers, no work for retailers, fewer dollars circulating. The cascade effect is just mind boggling.

Sadly forgotten now, Jean Hersey wrote many fine books on gardening. Her observations on the changing seasons have a poetic truth about them. Here she comments on March & its contrary motion:

Artist Tasha Tudor's visual calendar, "A Time To Keep", is corgi-filled and unabashedly innocent. Still, it's nice for the modern mind to imagine a March day that never was but should have been.
