I have always wanted to build a curriculum with (nearly) no strings attached. No resources trapped in PDFs! Permission given explicitly for making changes. I’m putting out a call for early contributors to an open-source IB Middle Years Programme math curriculum. davidwees.com/content/open...

I did some exploration this morning with a couple of free AI models to see how well they can make sense of Fawn Nguyen’s Visual Patterns. I had mixed results. (1/3)

I’m putting out my shingle again as a math education consultant! I’m particularly interested in leveraging my experience as a curriculum designer and designer of professional development to support schools and school districts with their math curriculum.

Reading "The Art of Coaching" by Jenny Bird & Sarah Gornall, and am struck by this observation: "Be alert for third-party coaching; remind the client the only person they can change is themselves."

Apparently a career 200 hitter just got 12 consecutive hits in a row, and a bunch of people are freaking out over how unlikely this event is. See www.youtube.com/watch?v=jM5I... for example. This is incorrect probabilitistic thinking. (1/9)

Here are four ways kids divided 2 brownies fairly with three people. What do you notice? What do you wonder? #mathchat #maththinking
Two rectangles each divided into 3 parts with the parts labeled with names. Two squares, divided into three parts like how one might divide a circle into three equal parts from its centre. Each part is labeled 1,2, and 3.Two rectangles are separated vertically into three parts. Each part is labeled 1/3 and has a person's name associated with it.Two squares are shown. One square is divided into two parts. The other is divided into halves, and one of those halves is split into 1/6ths. Under is written 1/2 + 1/6 = 2/3.

This diagram encapsulates for me the reason why formative assessment is so critical! It also helps justify the need for visual representations of mathematics to increase the pathways for understanding. #mathed #learning #communication
A Venn Diagram showing four nested ovals. In the outside oval, the caption reads, "What I think." In the next oval nested inside, the caption reads, "What I can put into words." The next nested oval reads, "What I say to other people." The final smallest nested oval reads, "What they understand."

Asking the UK mathematicians on BlueSky. What is your definition of a face? In North America, we use this definition in English: "a face is a flat surface (a planar region) that forms part of the boundary of a solid object." So for a cylinder, the two ends of the cylinder are faces. #ukmath #maths

This picture looks like something @howiehua.bsky.social would create. I love that the first frame here is a meme within a meme!
Two frames are stacked. The first shows three different actors for Spider-Man, who are all apart and pointing at each other. They are captioned with 3+3, 3 times 3, and 3 raised to the 3 power respectively. The second frame shows the same three Spider-Mans hugging. Above them are 2 raised to the second power, 2+2, and 2 times 2.

Happy New Year everyone! 2025 is a fascinating number, for those of you interested in numerology. 2025 = 45² and since 45 = (1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9) 2025 = (1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9)² That's kind of fun to me!

How are the graphs different? How are they similar? How are the situations different? How are they similar? Which graph matches with which situation, and how do you know? #connectingreps #mathsky #edusky
The visual shows two graphs. Graph A has time on the independent axis and distance from start on the dependent axis. It shows a graph with a constant slope up, followed by a horizontal line, followed by a constant slope down. Graph B shows a similar graph except the constant slope up is steeper than in graph A. It is also followed by a horizontal line and a constant slope down, exactly the same dimensions as A.

There are also 3 situations.

Situation 1: Chiemeka is in gym class. She walked straight for 100 meters on the track and stopped to rest and then walked back to the start.

Situation 2: Chiemeka is in gym class. She ran straight for 100 meters on the track and stopped to rest and then walked back to the start because she was tired.

Situation 3: Chiemeka is in gym class. She ran straight for 100 meters on the track, then she walked slowly for another 100 meters further, and then ran the last 100 meters.
