I have always wanted to build a curriculum with (nearly) no strings attached. No resources trapped in PDFs! Permission given explicitly for making changes. I’m putting out a call for early contributors to an open-source IB Middle Years Programme math curriculum. davidwees.com/content/open...

Here is another reminder for me of how language is filtered by our experiences and the medium of communication.
Communicator => culture of communicator => expression & medium => what is actually heard => culture of recipient => receiver

Bird and Gornall have filled their book with diagrams to help convey meaning, which I really like.

Here are four ways kids divided 2 brownies fairly with three people. What do you notice? What do you wonder? #mathchat #maththinking
Two rectangles each divided into 3 parts with the parts labeled with names. Two squares, divided into three parts like how one might divide a circle into three equal parts from its centre. Each part is labeled 1,2, and 3.Two rectangles are separated vertically into three parts. Each part is labeled 1/3 and has a person's name associated with it.Two squares are shown. One square is divided into two parts. The other is divided into halves, and one of those halves is split into 1/6ths. Under is written 1/2 + 1/6 = 2/3.

Some useful information on how some schools are defining acceptable uses of AI, both in teacher workflows and student tasks.

Four Stages of AI Adoption, according to Jennie (she told us to call her Jennie). I think these stages are similar for any new educational technology tool?

Here are two tasks I used back to back that worked really well, for my goals for those two days. #btc #mathed #mathsky
A sequence of BTC problems focused on scientific notation.A sequence of BTC thin slicing problems focused on finding remainders of large numbers.

How are the fraction additions different? How are they similar? How are the visuals different? How are they similar? Which visual goes with which fraction addition and how do you know? #connectingreps #mathsky #mathchat
The image shows 3 fraction additions, 2/3 + 1/4, 3/2 + 3/4, and 2/3 + 1/3 and two visuals: one showing 8/12 and 4/12 each drawn using a bar model, and 8/12 and 3/12 drawn using a bar model.

Here's new #connectingrepresentations task I created and used a few days ago with my 7th graders. How are the number lines similar? How are they different? Which list of numbers goes with which number line, and how do you know? #mathed #mathchat #mathsky

This diagram encapsulates for me the reason why formative assessment is so critical! It also helps justify the need for visual representations of mathematics to increase the pathways for understanding. #mathed #learning #communication
A Venn Diagram showing four nested ovals. In the outside oval, the caption reads, "What I think." In the next oval nested inside, the caption reads, "What I can put into words." The next nested oval reads, "What I say to other people." The final smallest nested oval reads, "What they understand."

This picture looks like something @howiehua.bsky.social would create. I love that the first frame here is a meme within a meme!
Two frames are stacked. The first shows three different actors for Spider-Man, who are all apart and pointing at each other. They are captioned with 3+3, 3 times 3, and 3 raised to the 3 power respectively. The second frame shows the same three Spider-Mans hugging. Above them are 2 raised to the second power, 2+2, and 2 times 2.

How are the graphs different? How are they similar? How are the situations different? How are they similar? Which graph matches with which situation, and how do you know? #connectingreps #mathsky #edusky
The visual shows two graphs. Graph A has time on the independent axis and distance from start on the dependent axis. It shows a graph with a constant slope up, followed by a horizontal line, followed by a constant slope down. Graph B shows a similar graph except the constant slope up is steeper than in graph A. It is also followed by a horizontal line and a constant slope down, exactly the same dimensions as A.

There are also 3 situations.

Situation 1: Chiemeka is in gym class. She walked straight for 100 meters on the track and stopped to rest and then walked back to the start.

Situation 2: Chiemeka is in gym class. She ran straight for 100 meters on the track and stopped to rest and then walked back to the start because she was tired.

Situation 3: Chiemeka is in gym class. She ran straight for 100 meters on the track, then she walked slowly for another 100 meters further, and then ran the last 100 meters.

My favourite #edtech tool is a set of coloured pens whether they are digital or for poster paper. Colour and annotation in a public record help make illuminate mathematical ideas like nothing else. #eduskychat

This comic perfectly captures why many parents don't want us to change the math we teach -- there will be no way for them to help their children if they get stuck.
Four panels of a comic strip.
Panel 1:
Young alien, "Are you able to assist me with arithmetic?"
Old alien, "The answer is unknown."

Panel 2:
Young alien, "I feel sadness and lack understanding."
Old alien, "We can feel that together."

Panel 3:
Young alien, "Did you complete this course?"
Old alien, "Many revolutions ago."

Panel 4:
Young alien, "Are the memories of the course returning?"
Old alien, "So far, only the emotions."
