It’s good to see so much attention being paid to the genocide in Palestine suddenly, let’s just see what people are saying…*checks posts*…ah, of course no one’s actually talking about the mass murder of Palestinians, how silly of me.

A peek into a gloomy future: closure of arts languages and music departments and the construction of a £10bn iron dome. One is definitely happening whilst the other is doubtful but still says a lot about where we’re headed as a country: straight to the fucking dogs.

The train carriage has become intolerable as a place to travel in peace and quiet contemplation. It’s forced me to wear my own earphones and listen to music when I don’t even want to, otherwise I spend my whole time challenging people and it’s exhausting.

As Guardian goes full-scale attack on Green Party, I keep thinking of Gana’s @parapraxismag.bsky.social essay I read yesterday: so many work to transform Gaza into a site of sympathy that demands *no obligation or binding claim* on those who witness www.parapraxismagazine.com/articles/gaz...
This transformation entails a redistribution of sympathy. Palestinian suffering does not disappear; it is absorbed into a broader field of concerns where it no longer commands a binding claim. The result is a geostrategic detachment: Gaza remains visible, its images and voices circulating as before, but the affective ties that might render its demands compelling are loosened. One sees, one hears, and one may even express concern, but without obligation.

I went through a Warhammer phase as a kid and can believe this: I spent a fortune on those goddamn models. But I also went to community centres and local churches to play games against other people my age and older so let’s celebrate it’s communal nature as much as it’s economic output.

This gets said constantly, but it worth reiterating: Games Workshop being bigger than fishing is important to shout about because you wouldn't know it from government talking points, which are rarely about anything creative or artistic. Growth won't involve fish or steel, it will involve goblins.

Ok so just got a text from my wife asking me why she just took delivery of 5 book shaped packages when we can’t watch TV in our room because I have stacked piles of books on the dresser due to lack of space and I don’t know whether to tell her 6 more will arrive tomorrow or just leave town??

But there were hot wars - loads of them. Korea, for a start, which Britain was a participant in, and then countless military operations across the empire to crush independence movements, followed by covert and overt actions of ‘regime change’ across Africa and Asia. WW2 deterred very little.

Absolutely - and many Brits were fighting to preserve empire rather than the notion of defending democracy or freedom or liberalism.

Agree with @alanallport.bsky.social here on questioning this - Many Brits were fighting to preserve empire, white supremacy, British Great Power status, etc, and then it immediately gave way to the Cold War and, in Britain's case, the suppression of independence movements BUILT ON FREEDOM.

Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

Support the National Trust by voting for Council members by 11:59pm on 30 October 2026. Quickvote is convenient if you're short of time or worried about inadvertently voting for Restore Trust's Bonigala, Cristea, Goldman, Mealing or Omrani. In our often bad times, the Trust's doing good things.
