This is a historic moment: the first time the rights of Nature have entered the UK parliamentary process. The Bill recognises Nature as a legal subject, reorders the hierarchy of rights, creates a duty of care towards Nature and embeds Nature’s rights into UK decision-making across all sectors.

It’s #waspwednesday! Inspired by @apsciencebylyn.bsky.social I went looking for nugget wasps in my yard and found one on the compost bin. Genus Dirhinus, uses face shovels to dig for fly pupae to parasitize. Not sure what the huge femurs are for. #bugsky #macrophotography
Insect with black pitted surface except orange on legs and base of antennae. Rear femurs are very thick, head has two forward protrusions (genus name dirhinus means “two noses”.

Walking by the River Wandle close to its Carshalton source the other day, I was pleased to see some flowering Water-Crowfoot, which I think is Ranunculus penicillatus ssp. psuedofluitans. I then spied a Bumblebee, possibly Buff-tailed, land on a flower in the fast-flowing water! #WildWebsWednesday

This bejeweled little nugget wasp species (Aeptencyrtus bruchi) has graduated from my list of Creatures I've Only Seen Once when this lass appeared at the base of a clump of grass I was checking for tiny salticids. I found the 1st in my yard back in 2022. Very happy to see her again. 🩵

In the last week or so Western Giant Ichneumonid Wasps (Megarhyssa notrtoni) have oviposited on a dying spruce tree in our yard. Today a female horntail (Xeris indecisus) is ovipositing on the same tree, with a couple male horntails hanging around. The ichneumons parasitize the horntail larvae.
A female horntail with a long ovipositor is laying an egg in a dead of dying spruce tree. The head, thorax, and wings are black, and the abdomen is red.A male horntail sits motionless on a dead spruce tree. It is mostly black (except for the abdomen, which is red) and about 20 mm long

Spain just became one of Europe's cheapest power markets. Here is how.
How wind and solar quietly pushed gas off the margin, and the wholesale price followed.

A tarantula-hawk wasp (Pepsis sp.) at Carlito Springs Open Space near Tijeras, N.M., on May 22, 2026. Why walk when you can fly? 'Cause the ground is where the tarantulas are, and you need to catch one to feed each of your dozen or so babies. #nature #naturephotography #wasp
A large wasp walking across tan-colored desert dirt. The wasp is in profile, with the head and prominent antennae to the left and the end of the abdomen to the right. The overall color is black, but with many bright blue highlights on the head, thorax, abdomen, and legs. The visible compound eye is all black. The orange wings are seen on edge in this photo, so aren't that prominent visually.

We seem to have found a rest stop for the busy Leafcutter Bee in our garden. The precision of the leafcutting is quite extraordinary. Painted Lady already out in the garden, too...
The image shows a small, stripey bee with a piece of green leaf. She is a solitary species, the Leafcutter Bee, that builds 'cigars' of carefully cut leaf pieces to provision with pollen, lay an egg in, and then seal up. Just amazing, so we shaill have to check our Bee houses in a day or so to see if she has used one of them.

An ancient Greek silver coin depicting a bee! 🐝 😍 Minted in Ephesus, 390-380 BC. Photo Getty Museum #Archaeology
A Getty Museum photo showing a silver tetradrachm (four-drachma coin) stamped in high relief on the obverse of the coin with a bee viewed from above, within a dotted border. It is dark grey silver against a lighter grey background. Relief details include legs, wings, antennae, segmented abdomen and sting. The Greek letters, Ε (‘epsilon’) and Φ (‘phi’), an abbreviation for ‘Ephesus’, are placed either side of the bee. Diameter 7 mm.

From the museum catalogue:
“The reverse shows the foreparts of a stag kneeling in right profile, looking back towards a palm tree. An inscription to the right reads ΚΑΡΝΩ[Ψ] (‘KARNO[PS]’).
The bee, stag, and palm are all emblems of Ephesus, a Greek city on the west coast of Turkey. This city was an important center of worship for the Greek goddess Artemis, and the images on Ephesian coinage typically promote this association. The bee was originally the symbol of an early Anatolian goddess who the Greeks later identified with their goddess, Artemis; so close was the connection that the priestesses of the goddess were called "honey bees." The two Greek letters, Ε (‘epsilon’) and Φ (‘phi’), are an abbreviation for Ephesus. The palm tree alludes to Artemis' birth beneath a palm tree on the island of Delos. The stag – an animal sacred to Artemis – symbolizes the goddess' role as protector of wild animals, and may also refer to the sculptures that flanked her cult statue in the temple at Ephesus”
