This morning I watched this video on James Patterson/Mr. Beast's 'The Most Dangerous Games' and how some publishers gamble that two big names with disparate fan bases can bring knockout sales despite the quality of the book itself. Spoiler: it did not.

🧵1/6 Speaking of the Blacklist: Did you know that simply “being against” Hitler in the US in the 1930s could land you on the blacklist in the 1950s? During the Cold War, opposing Nazis "too early" was a red flag for the McCarthyites.

Hey, what if we all embrace the idea that neutrality in the face of injustice is never the move, because whether you intend to or not, you're just going to end up siding with the oppressor.

Currently reading. My favorite Marlowe. Written while he was watching his wife slowly die. The Long Goodbye is Chandler’s most ambitious book. In it, he tried to stretch the boundaries of private eye fiction and push the genre into serious literature. I believe that he succeeded.

Back in 1935, Sinclair Lewis wrote a book called "It Can’t Happen Here." In it, he predicts the rise of a fascist populist who erodes democratic norms, enriches himself, and pledges to give each (white) family in the U.S. $5k annually if he's reelected. He also wanted to annex Canada and Mexico.

This week's LANTERNS episode, “OutKast,” puts the story on hold for a flashback to John Stewart's origin. It's a remarkable hour of TV that explores Blackness, fear, privilege, and the pressure Black people face to prove they belong. The racist nerds are big mad tonight, and I love that for them.

One day, a mainstream news organization is going to explain that a POTUS can't, in fact, change the name of a geographic place name with an EO, that it's actually a complex, multi-step process that also requires recognition from international bodies like the UN; alas, today is not that day.

A good way to think about the relevance of James Carville is if someone who worked on Grover Cleveland’s successful 1892 campaign spent all their time critiquing FDR’s 1932 campaign as not being the real Democratic Party that Cleveland represented.
