I’ve probably watched Hot Fuzz twenty times, but only tonight have I noticed that as Angel rides in for the climactic shoot-out, as he goes past a shop, there’s a poster for Romeo and Juliet. But instead of Martin and Eve, it’s now the two understudies!

This is an interesting point that has come up in our Local Nature Recovery Strategy: If you start post Enclosure (circa 1600-1650 in Tees Valley) then your story now is loss of hedgerows. Start before & the loss is of wetlands and massive amounts of grassland/grazing moor; hedges are irrelevant.

Great to hear the PM say “We are going to be much prouder in standing up for our values and the rule of law” re foreign information warfare. I wonder if he or the Home Secretary might consider doing the same when it comes to masked vigilantes shutting down infrastructure and harassing the RNLI

There's a fascinating relationship whereby the more money you have that should allow you to have and act on strong principles, the weaker your principles become. Instead, your only principle becomes adherence to money.

I think we should give Piddington what they want, today, and make them independent. Cut off literally everything the state provides. No water, no power, no medical services, no fire, no education, no currency, no banking. Just leave them to work out a barter system.

Hard to escape the impression Labour have handed Reform a double win. Finance reform should have been Day One and done by now. Instead, they prevaricated. So, Reform have not only been able to bank unprecedented sums of dodgy money, they can rightly hit Labour for trying to make retroactive changes.

NEW Why holding a placard is a terrorist act, while causing disruption in a balaclava is not The mess caused by ministers and the police not taking terrorism law seriously By me at @prospectmagazine.co.uk www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/law/th...

Recent events in England now reveal the practical difference between terrorists and protesters. It would seem that terrorists peacefully hold placards and get immediately arrested, while protesters wear black uniforms and balaclavas and disrupt infrastructure and do not get arrested.

How did we get into this mess? How have we placed ourselves in the position where terrorism legislation is used to detain and prosecute peaceful protesters, while those adopting the terror tactics of private armies seem to be free to do as they wish?

The reason is that for some time British politicians have not taken terrorism legislation seriously, and that ministers have got into the habit of misusing terror laws for easy targets.

Bishops and Archbishops have voted against: abolition of slavery, abolition of death penalty, decriminalising abortion, decriminalising gay sex, same-sex marriage. So this is just the latest in long tradition of opposition to choice and freedom. It's scandalous that they get to vote on laws at all!

Removing basic amenities such as laundry rooms and cramming more prisoners in the same square footage doesn’t sound like it will help with the crisis in prison conditions. Which is fine if all you want from prison is temporary warehousing of people. Less so if you want to stop people reoffending.
