David Ham @davidham.bsky.social · 13/08/2026STV with single member constituencies reduces to AV. This fixes the wasted vote problem but is not in any sense proportional (indeed it can be even less proportional than FPTP). It also doesn't address the issue of inequality in power of votes at all. Better than FPTP, still not actually good. 000
David Ham @davidham.bsky.social · 12/08/2026After all, we don't think there is a lack of constituency link with local councillors who represent multi-seat constituencies (albeit in England elected by FPTP, which is gratuituously silly). 020
David Ham @davidham.bsky.social · 12/08/2026Surely multi-member constituencies elected by STV also maintain the constituency link, don't have multiple classes of MP, and have the distinct advantage that for the vast majority of voters, at least one of their constituency MPs will be of a party fairly close to their preference. 130
David Ham @davidham.bsky.social · 12/08/2026There always were. To exercise freedom of movement you have to be working, actively looking for work, studying or economically self sufficient (e.g. retired with pension). The UK never tried to enforce the corner cases where none of the above apply. 120

David Ham @davidham.bsky.social · 12/06/2026In the "not publications" disciplines (for me this is maths and geoscience), I think there is no expectation that work hasn't been presented before. Indeed you might talk about work recently published in a journal. In the "publications" disciplines (e.g. computer science) novelty is expected. 230
David Ham @davidham.bsky.social · 12/06/2026I think the distinction here is between fields that publish conference proceedings and hence consider conferences to be publications and those that don't. Special issues are usually a feature of the "conferences are not publications" camp. 110

David Ham @davidham.bsky.social · 13/05/2026That’s not how the maths works. Losing 8% per year means losing 49% over 13 years- which is still implausible but we shouldn’t also be in the business of making up numbers. 000
David Ham @davidham.bsky.social · 09/05/2026No, it really is. If we were using virtually any other voting system, “not enough switched from Labour to Green” would not cause a Reform win. This is all on FPTP. 140
David Ham @davidham.bsky.social · 09/05/2026Very few did. As John Curtis has pointed out, it’s often Labour voters switching to Green that leaves Reform as the winner under FPTP. 2130
David Ham @davidham.bsky.social · 09/05/2026That survey doesn’t have an option for people who are turned off by Labour‘s anti-immigrant stance. Anecdotally in Lambeth I think that’s a factor. Probably one which correlates with the trans rights issue for related liberal values reasons. 0150
