David Ellis @davidellis95.bsky.social · 19/09/2026in fields such as xenolonguistics and philosophy. What is alien language? If we encountered it, would we understand it? Join us for a dialogue on these topics between philosopher David Ellis and science fiction author Eli K.P. William. [2/2] 030
David Ellis @davidellis95.bsky.social · 19/09/2026looking forward to having a panel discussion with @elikpwilliam.com tonight at @flightsoffoundry.bsky.social about alien languages! Alien language has been depicted in numerous speculative fiction stories. In recent years, it has also become the subject of serious academic study [1/2] 122
David Ellis @davidellis95.bsky.social · 07/06/2026While I agree that the creation of art is itself a valuable thing, I don’t think that a person is objectively wrong to judge the output as of equal value as an AI output. Maybe some artists create work that just isn’t that great, despite how valuable the experience of its creation is to them 100
David Ellis @davidellis95.bsky.social · 07/06/2026But what about those who don't care about those things? Sure, the creator cares, and plenty of others do; but there are people who don't care about the blood, sweat, and tears that went into some artwork. Are they wrong? 110
David Ellis @davidellis95.bsky.social · 06/06/2026Will it get to a stage where the work of both are indistinguishable? 000
David Ellis @davidellis95.bsky.social · 23/05/2026AI doesn't have to 'replace us', but it will do if we let it. And we will let it if we close ourselves off from it. #AI #workplace #teaching 010
David Ellis @davidellis95.bsky.social · 23/05/2026AI can help address these areas and give us the time and space to do what we are most passionate about: teaching, researching, and helping students reach their full potential. We can't be doing that if we're manually rewriting 8 reading lists. 110
David Ellis @davidellis95.bsky.social · 23/05/2026There are plenty of tasks that we do as teachers (I'm speaking just from my perspective as a lecturer) that, frankly, we treat as 'robotic work'. Let's not kid ourselves; we all complain about certain tasks for precisely that reason! 100
David Ellis @davidellis95.bsky.social · 23/05/2026Controversial view: AI isn't 'the problem'. Developing the mindset that it is, and doing everything we can to ban it makes it a problem. Yes, it's frightening and disruptive, but AI isn't going away. And we need not go away because of it *if we use it for augmenting work practice*. 100

David Ellis @davidellis95.bsky.social · 18/10/2025Is religious fictionalism compatible with Wittgenstein’s view of religion?
