The whole 'ecological civilization' idea comes back into the West from China... and is just another example of how intellectuals of ALL stripes are looking to China for new social ideas from... authoritarians, abundance types, to the green progressive left

The text of my review of Jeremy Lent's new book 'Ecocivilization' in is now unlocked - next tweet Short version is: it's a deeply useful, visionary account of a future civilization that is extremely ambitious & could do with a more dynamic presentation of history

I was lucky enough to see Dolly Parton years ago at the O2 in London. I arrived thinking she was a regular celebrity singer and left blown away by her multi-instrumental musical talent and incredible between song patter and storytelling. What a legend! 💔

I need to buy @rowhoop.bsky.social's new book! "Economics grows out of ecology... It has never been more urgent that we understand how nature works, and that economists correct their ignorance of ecology." via @graceblakeley.substack.com substack.com/home/post/p-...

Darwinism does not support capitalism
Darwin described the webs of connectedness that support all life, and economists need to understand that their discipline grows out of ecology

I saw this quote while at Goldsmiths the other week and have to admit that I'd never heard of Mark Fisher before...
A quote in black on a white tiled wall: 'Emanciapatory politics must always destroy the appearance of a 'natural order', must reveal what is presented as necessary and inevitable to be a mere contingency, just as it must make what was previously deemed to be impossible seem attainable' by Mark Fisher (1968-2017)

Yesterday evening, for the second time in a year, the Met Police raided Westminster Quaker Meeting House and arrested a number of young nonviolent activists. STATEMENT: www.quaker.org.uk/news-and-eve...
Westminster Meeting House raided by Metropolitan Police again. Statement: “For Quakers, faith and action are inseparable. Peaceful protest, prayer and nonviolent action are integral parts of many Quakers' religious life.

Whilst we take the planning of criminal acts very seriously, we believe that this incident is a deliberate targeting of committed young people who want to make our country a more equitable place. This raid is part of a systematic stifling of dissent.

That this is the second time in a year that the police have raided our meeting house dramatically illuminates the broader trend in the UK of cracking down on those who disagree with the government. The right to protest is fundamental to our democracy. It's a key part of how people make their voices heard between elections.” – Oliver Robertson, Head of Witness and Worship

I've been thinking about this today
A sketch of the tree of life by Charles Darwin from his notebook circa 1837. The words 'I think' are above and A, B, C, D at different elements of the tree. They are all unified in the trunk of the tree where a 1 is circled - representing the universal common ancestor of all life (a radical idea then and still not fully assimilated into our worldview).

I might write something about this kind of comment (left on @unlearnecon.bsky.social recent video). I see no value at all in 'proving' in a perfectly contextless world that countries A & B could benefit form trading X & Y. What makes anyone think this logic then maps onto reality?
Comment that reads: 'I understand that the example of England and Portugal maybe only worked because of the slaves and the gold, that doesn't matter for the sake of the argument, as well as the moral value of that episode. You can change the names of the countries for fictional ones, and change the products for letters like product A and B. for the argument you are making in this video you have to prove mathematically that the theorem doesn't work. And if the perfect scenario in which it work is unattainable, you have to explain why it will always be unattainable and then put the example in numbers if you don't do that, then, as you said you don't understand the theorem of comparative advantage. You really don't get this or in reality you really are not interested with anything else but to prove your point even if it rests on flawed logic?'
