I told my wife about the executive order (and my 1st post), and she remarked that it’s like we’re living in a Mel Brooks movie.

Good faith participation in republican government is load-bearing. Once you’ve walked away from a genuine commitment to the truth (I’m not talking about honest disagreements), once you decide “reality” is what one man says, it’s game over.

We’re covering Anthropic v “DoW” in class next week, and I’m writing up a whole explanation about why I’ll continue to reference the Department of Defense.

Because (in part) of what it asks of his followers. I think Thomas Paine said it best, "When a man has so far corrupted and prostituted the chastity of his mind, as to subscribe his professional belief to things he does not believe, he has prepared himself for the commission of every other crime."

And to be clear, it doesn’t matter if such actions are the consequence of detachment from reality, some power play to soothe a bruised ego, or some other driver. The behavior should be disqualifying. Why?

This is mad king territory. The problem is we’ve been in mad king territory for some time & it’s not like a clear line was crossed at some point. Gulf of America? What about claiming to win an election he lost? Insisting his first inauguration had the largest attendance ever?

Yes, satire is dead, but we can all chuckle at the fact members of the executive will now have to admit thermostats could possibly count as a “super intelligence” depending on whether you think a bimetallic strip is a sufficient abstraction to meet the definition under 15 U.S. Code § 9401(3)(B).

One good way to have your slide deck waiting for you when delivering a guest lecture, post a link to social media. Then you can just grab it without using a thumb drive or having to log in somewhere and find it. Incidentally, later today I'll be taking some students back in time to 2012.

I was an auxiliary police officer (volunteer first responder, like a firefighter but mostly directing traffic) right after 9/11, and I remember how clearly our CO made it that part of our job was watching out for hate crimes and making sure that our Muslim community members felt safe & supported.

Honestly, I was trying to make bank accounts sound as cool as possible.

12yo likes to extend bedtime by starting big discussions. Today's rabbit hole starter, "What do you mean money grows in a bank account?" Talked about loans, deposit insurance, and compound interest! Also touched upon retirement and different places you could put your money.

I accidentally opened a package before the kids went to bed, and there was a lot of bubble wrap. Poor timing. :/ The bubble wrap has now been divided among them and nature is running its course.

No, Doctorow is way more prolific, though I did once ride in an elevator with him. I totally fanboyed, I can't remember how it came out, but upon hearing I had been both a HS teacher and public defender, in an approving way he was like, "tough gigs" or something similar. So, I did feel solidarity.
