Was everyone but me already aware that there’s an okonomiyaki stand at the Smorgasburg fair in Brooklyn? This seems like it should be common knowledge.

A perfect example of what amounts to journalistic malpractice from @barakravid.bsky.social. Iran and Oman have never said anything about mediators for these talks. Iran has expressly denied any US involvement. Without credible and reliable sources, this sort of reporting is worse than useless.

I’m guessing there’s going to be a lot of wild speculation, so please remember:

[BREAKING NEWS CONSUMER'S HANDBOOK]
1. In the immediate aftermath, news outlets will get it wrong.
2. Don't trust anonymous sources.
3. Don't trust stories that cite another news outlet as the source of the information.
4. There's almost never a second shooter.
5. Pay attention to the language the media uses.
• "We are getting reports"... could mean anything.
• "We are seeking confirmation"... means they don't have it.
• "[News outlet] has learned"... means it has a scoop or is going out on limb.
6. Look for news outlets close to the incident.
7. Compare multiple sources.
8. Big news brings out the fakers. And photoshoppers.
9. Beware reflexive retweeting. Some of this is on you.

1) I see no credible evidence here that Musk isn’t a Nazi “for realz”. 2) Even if there was, I don’t care and don’t see why anyone else should care what’s “in Musk’s heart”. The @juliusgoat.bsky.social quote may be well-worn at this point, but I suspect it’ll have to remain in regular rotation.

Historians have a word for Germans who joined the Nazi party, not because they hated Jews, but out of a hope for restored patriotism, or a sense of economic anxiety, or a hope to preserve their religious values, or dislike of their opponents, or raw political opportunism, or convenience, or ignorance, or greed.  That word is "Nazi." Nobody cares about their motives anymore.

I honestly don’t think the Brian Thompson murder means much in and of itself. People are murdered every day. It’s really only getting attention for now because it makes for dramatic headlines. If there are copycats, however, it could become an entirely different phenomenon.

Then Secretary of State Mike Pompeo did meet Baradar face to face in Doha for the signing of the withdrawal agreement (that’s the two of them below). In 2021, Pompeo claimed that he had told Baradar "we knew exactly where his house was" at some point during the negotiations.
