Oh, was there conflict when people previously wanted civil rights extended to include them?
Screenshot of article which reads: As the electorate has grown
to include men of color, women, and the poor, it has become more plural-
istic. Contemporary America, for all its flaws, has grown to be a diverse
democracy that continually manages a vast array of opinions, identities,
and cultures. That pluralism is a central reason for the vibrancy and in-
novation of American cultural, intellectual, and political power.
But each of these steps was the result of political and cultural con-
flict. As every new group of Americans was enfranchised, a powerful
political movement opposed it. This opposition was often violent, com-
ing both from the state and from individual citizens who believed that
the ascendant group needed to be put back in its place. Much of this vio-
lence endures today. When marginalized groups have spoken out (often
in a nonviolent manner) against the violence perpetrated against them,
they have often incurred further anger and violence.

ICE's militarization continues. A new procurement forecast lists $2 million for a ROOK. In the manufacturer's words, that is a tracked armored vehicle with a hydraulic ram that breaks through block walls and steel doors, plus a platform that lifts four armed officers to a third floor window.
Manufacturer marketing image for The Rook. An olive drab armored vehicle built on a Caterpillar tracked loader chassis, photographed against a white background. Two officers in helmets, body armor, and tactical gear stand on a low armored ramp at the front of the machine, aiming rifles over an angled steel shield. A second armored box is raised on the loader arms above and behind them, holding two more officers who are aiming through gun ports and bulletproof glass sight ports. The name THE ROOK and the manufacturer Ring Power are stamped on the track housing. A specification list at upper left includes an enclosed cab, a hydraulic quick coupler for swapping attachments, and NIJ Level IV armor.Screenshot of a Department of Homeland Security Acquisition Planning Forecast System record, number F2026075014, published Aug. 20, 2026. The component is ICE/OD/OFTP. The NAICS code is 336992, Military Armored Vehicle, Tank, and Tank Component Manufacturing. The requirements title is Purchase of ROOK, NIJ Level IV Armored Caterpillar Multi-Terrain Loader. A highlighted description says the equipment would support law enforcement and public safety missions by providing protected mobility, obstacle removal, access support, and response capability in hazardous or high-risk environments. The estimated dollar range is $1,000,000 to $2,000,000. Place of performance is Ft. Benning, Georgia. The contract type is firm fixed price with an anticipated award in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026.

This is VERY big news. Previously, even vacated or expunged convictions could still get someone deported, if an immigration judge determined that the conviction was vacated for reasons unrelated to a legal defect (such as for rehabilitation-related purposes). The 4th Circuit says not any more!
Courts and agencies have long struggled with how to analyze the immigration effects (if any) of a vacated conviction. Eventually, agency practice cobbled together a framework that sought to balance policy priorities. Under that framework, a conviction vacated because of a substantive or procedural defect in the underlying proceedings no longer qualifies as a conviction for immigration purposes, while a conviction vacated for rehabilitation, immigration hardship, or another reason still does. Many courts deferentially accepted that distinction. But the statute we apply here does not make the continuing effect of a vacated conviction turn on the state court’s reason for vacating it. It makes inadmissible “any alien convicted of” the relevant offense. 8 U.S.C. § 1182(a)(2)(A)(i). In this case, the petitioner’s conviction was vacated and her charge dismissed. At that point, she was no longer “convicted of” that offense. So we grant in part the petition for review

No better example of the banality of evil than seeing a "good" immigration judge's asylum denial rate double or triple once Trump got into office. This somehow bothers me more than the consistently "bad" judges who at least adhere to a moral code, albeit a malevolent one.

I've never seen such an effort to censor a document as I have the Amnesty International report on gender critical groups because of JK Rowling. They removed the report from the Wayback Machine and now I got a DMCA strike on my Google Drive for having it. It was deleted and removed from my account.
A screenshot of an email viewed in dark mode with the subject line "Google DMCA Violation." The email from Google informs the recipient that they have received a notification under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) that some of their materials allegedly infringe on copyrights. It explains the removal process, mentions that notice details will be posted on Lumen, warns against repeated violations, and lists one affected Google Drive URL at the bottomA nearly identical mobile browser screenshot of the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. It shows a search for the same Amnesty International UK resources URL, resulting in the same message: "This URL has been excluded from the Wayback Machine."A mobile browser screenshot of the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. Lumen confirms that it was Amnesty International that sent the DMCA strike. I will be contesting it as this document is a matter of public debate and abusing copyright in this manner to censor it is absolutely disgusting. What complete cowards.
A screenshot of a "DMCA (Copyright) Complaint to Google" page. The sender is listed as Amnesty International UK, sent on August 19, 2026. The description outlines a copyright claim regarding two documents, "Like a Snowball" and "A Growing Threat," which the sender states were published in error without completing internal review and do not reflect official positions. The complaint targets two allegedly infringing Google Drive URLs.
