When a mechanic gets cut, it's common to keep it around on a handful of cards. Retaliate was causing elaborate ability chains and was too punishing to players who wanted to attack enemy units, resulting in noninteractive or complex board states. But a few cards were still worth making! #FFGStaff

While the set's original Retaliate keyword (get a reward for surviving damage) got cut, the Bad Batch retained the mechanic as a cohesive identity, with Omega as a way to keep the play patterns we liked in the set without overloading HMW with a whole additional new mechanic #FFGStaff

It's time for the public to learn that public services cannot run on the concept of doing more with less. When there are large cuts to services that rely on public monies, people should feel the results. Libraries, universities, etc. need to stop trying to lessen the visibility of funding cuts.

After a year of multicolor, we wanted to resupply monocolored strategies with a cycle of strong cards in HMW. MJ had the idea that, to ensure the cards would be strong, they be vanilla units with crazy high stats—good stats are valuable in any deck, so the floor would be comfortably high #FFGStaff

Ryan designed this card, and I immediately championed it, because the play pattern of figuring out how to maximize the Support attack is really interesting, especially since you also want the attacker to be someone worth shielding. If ever there was a unit I'd want a pilot on, this is it #FFGStaff

I've always been primarily interested in the franchise for its lore, narrative, characters, and storytelling more than just the video games. It's much harder to be optimistic about those elements of the franchise if it looks like the entire story team is being disbanded permanently 😞

I'm generally in favor of new teams getting to work on Halo games, so was initially pretty optimistic about the franchise being moved to Activision (especially given all the behind-the-scenes drama that's perpetually sabotaged Halo Studios). Power-matters is particularly compelling in this set, as Advantage tokens can make even unassuming units temporarily strong. This design turned out surprisingly strong, so we had to remove the HP buff—making it arguably a red card. The dependence on many other units is what keeps it green #FFGStaff

Icons requires all iconic characters (of course) but also has fewer leaders overall. We also commit to leader lists very early in the design process, so when contexts change (such as adding Icons to the product lineup in 2026) we can sometimes end up with choices that look unexpected in retrospect

The expectation is that more iconic characters will have 1-2 leaders per year, but it can get complicated when adjacent set themes expect to have the same characters, or if a fan favorite is accidentally left out for a while. Any given set requires a balance of "iconic" and "deep cut" characters

Also Tamiyo. The Kamigawa chapter of the story arc was basically perfect lol. They had a clear motive/purpose to be there, there was intrigue as the characters' allegiances were in question, and it ended with a big operation that converted a major ally into a dangerous enemy

But the problem is that no amount of "society reacted after the invasion" can counteract the fact that something as physically invasive as a Phyrexian invasion _visually_ disappeared from every world immediately. Where are the ruins of Realmbreaker? Where are the repurposed Phyrexian tech?

Musing on the Phyrexian arc: It often gets criticized for having no lasting ramifications, and it's felt on multiple occasions that the narrative team has tried to address those criticisms by going out of their way to call back to it in the fiction.
