Many of the rest is brand have undergone some real enshitification. When they first came out the had excellent guests on and interviewed really well but now it's very self referential and all about the brand.

French rifles are weird and wonderful. They just hit different and are a really interesting reflection of French military culture.

More of an Empire fan. Despite sieges grtting a bad rap I felt they have some nifty features and the forts could act as a decent force multiplier. My favourites always remained contested river crossings.

I once was asked how my degree in Military History would be of zny relevance to teaching KS3 and 4 kids. I gave a cracking answer (even if I do say so myself) but I'm pretty sure my tone lost me the job.

Folks: these days the England system has BTECs, T-Levels, degree apprenticeships, a whole load of other apprenticeship assessments, and very flexible HE entry across a broad range of providers, including foundation years for those without L3. We already *have* a lot of pathways!

So much this! Nothing more enjoyable than reading out a report from Churchill abkut the 2nd Happy Time in my most terrible Churchill impression. But Helen is bang on, it really engages and hits different for the kids.

There's also an arrogant assumption in it that these skills are inherent (and guess who in society has those skills). I will bang on about this with increasing frustration. All the great tradies I worked with developed them. Dad was adamant it took 5 years to learn how to seing a hammer properly.

Unfortunately you can't have a narrative of improvement unless it's all broken. I had high hopes with Phillipsons' initial acknowledgement that their had been success under the Tories, but that died a quick death.

Trying something new in September with our KS3 history booklets. Each lesson has been reformatted to start with an immersive story. The section is called 'Entering the Past' and is followed by a longer, more analytical section called 'Understanding the Past' where the main content is delivered.

What maddens me is that you can have both rain and heat sensors. In a previous life as a builder I used to set these windows up in residential 'executive' new builds. I was the youngest guy on site and no one wanted to donthe programming. That being said, the rain sensors were better than the heat.

There is a school local to met that was designed this way. The architects got their way and created a 'hot desk' enviroment so most staff don't rven have their own classroom.

It's a great tool for explaining interpretations. We use the Charles II 'King of Bling' as a hook, discuss why it shows thst view and then proceed to explain why Charles was such an asshole (in my eyes) 😅 I'm assuming for this cohort what they mean now is the TV show rather than the books.

Even then it was mixed bands of blokes basically. Even the Varagian guard is hyped beyond belief and was more generally made up of northern Europeans inc. Anglo-Saxons. Considering it still existed wjen Constantinople fell its hard to say it was always a 'Viking' force.

Calling the Vikings professional is relying on some serious myth making. Easy to be great against unarmed monastaries and small coastal towns. Thw Prussias is a weird and again more nuanced system. The role of education above all else. It also ignores the wider German states' role.

The kids LOVE it. This discussion focussed natured of it has really increased engagement. The hooks on characters really allow them to link in to a bigger picture. This is still a work in progress and undoubtedly will need refining with practise - but looking forward to this journey.

To look into the experience of a RMO and his view on 'war neurosis' has been amazing. The Western Front Association was invaluable here. To pinch @hughrichards.bsky.social key takeaways. This is really rewarding as has been great to research. It takes time and a lot of thought, it isn't easy. /8

Has been ome of my favourites. Especially looking at disability and the war. Contrastic the experience of physical cases to those suffering with long term combat stress has been really moving. Looking st Arthur Hurren who worked as an amputee in the Poppy Factory and Dr. James Dunn on the 2/RWF /7

Possible by looking at the the role of the Australian Light Horse in Palestine. A great opportunity to contrast the nature of warfare and the extent of industrialisation. Men riding across the desert really stirs a great image. The Australian War Memorial's archives were amazing. The final EQ /6

This was to contrast the creation of the MG with the experience of the 2nd VC winner of the war who used a Maxim in his action (thanks to the @vickersmg.bsky.social for the archive detail). Jumping from the big to the small picture was great. The kids loved it and it contextualised the use of MGs /4

1. What was the nature of Industrial Warfare in 1914? 2. How did armies adapt to Imdustrial Warfare? 3. How did Industrial Warfare change society? At the core of this was stories and using an individual lens to see into the bigger picture. 1914 saw us looking at Hiram Maxim and Sidney Godley /3

I do wonder if you uni folk are meeting the tail end of the behaviour we experience in secondary schools. Thebexam drive has created a spoon fed culture that many never shift. We're desparately trying to get them to think harder to minimal avail woth all but the hardest working.

The thing is Birbalsighn isn't actuallyndoong anything unique. Most schools have similar policies it just varies on how well they are implemented. The big difference is her political agenda for curriculum and knack for self-promotion.

We've based ours on it loosely and it's been pretty successful. Most of our writing is centred on What, How, Why paragraphs. Our new experiment is to get the kids to use metaphors in their how and why sections. We've done this by showing this through how Historians do it.

So much this - I loathe when guests on podcasts (often 'historians' rather than Academics) whinge about how we don't teach their niche interest. This goes for the general public too. It's as if people believe schools teach nothing but History.

From a warfare perspective it would be really easy to maintain a diverse EQs but look 'patriotic'. A passive aggressive method. We'll look at the Sinai-Palestine Campaign - oh look there happens to be Indian, ANZAC and Egyptian troops there, whoopsie.
