If I ever have another pet, there's a nontrivial chance I'll name it Oo Goobley.

I used to have a "No Solicitors" sign on the door, but then I got a simpleton who insisted, "I'm not a lawyer!" They're coming back since COVID, and I'm considering "NO" in big block letters.

The Citadel’s production of the comic Murder on the Orient Express is like Clue, but genuinely funny. Excellent cast and astonishing set design. We’ll worth the francs.

Improbably, @hugobookclub.bsky.social chose my suggestion of A Hero Born for the next book club, so I've begun reading it for the fifth or sixth time. It's Volume 1/4 of Legend of the Condor Heroes, a great entry point to wuxia.

I once treated a laid-off colleague to lunch to discuss what he'd do next. Upon perusing the ungrammatical menu, he declared he'd like to walk the earth like Caine from Kung Fu and correct signs for food.

Excellent wordcount day. Filled out an incomplete chapter and made structural improvements to the current, making the total wordcount more "real." If I finish that chapter tomorrow morning, it's fresh road ahead.

D&D + Taylor Swift + doom metal x GWAR = Castle Rat. It's long past time we recognized the D&D metal subgenre.

The End of Oak Street a silly sugar rush. If you're up for that, you'll have a good time.

@crossroadsfolk.bsky.social Not really folk, but for sound-based horror, Kurosawa Kiyoshi's Kôrei (Seance, 2000) introduced me to both the director and J-horror. Later, I discovered it's based on the English thriller, Seance on a Wet Afternoon (1964). Both recommended. #folkhorrorfriday

In my continuing quest to cook food I loved as a child, I fried some buttermilk-brined chicken breasts. Still need to work on my temperature control, but I tested one of the "bad" pieces to see whether it's salvageable. It's more delicious than I could have imagined. Bright spot in a dark world.

theres this one tumblr post ive seen talking about that phenomenon but w fiction writing that I think about often

darling of dots feb 24
been stewing on an analytical approach to fiction which call "is this book afraid of me?" and in order to answer this question you determine how hard the book is trying to make sure you don't come after the writer on twitter

the fucked-up part is that specifically notice this in like, BIPOC or queer romances because their authors a) are more likely to be harassed online b) tend to care about writing inclusive and intersectional books more, both of which are totally valid reasons, but unfortunately a book that is scared to be misunderstood is also scared to challenge the reader or allow for too much nuance or grey areas or character flaws and am sorry to say that it often makes for less compelling stories because it means shying away from ambiguities and complexities in an effort to reassure me, the reader, that everyone here is a Good Person engaging in Healthy Behaviours and Relationships
