The other day, in conversation with a recent Rhode Island transplant, I had occasion to share one of my favorite pieces of local literary trivia: in Tom Wolfe's novel, "The Bonfire of the Vanities" (1987), he uses Providence to convey how shitty a particular part of the Bronx is. The passage:

A chunk of text that reads, "“They reached the other end of the bridge. Well, here it was, the Bronx. It was like an old and decrepit part of Providence, Rhode Island. There were some massive but low buildings, grimy and moldering, and broad weary black streets running up and down slopes.”
