Interesting, thanks!! I figured you’d have Mahmood on there but was interested in who else. Can see the case for Streeting either way. Obviously get rid of Nandy but feel like we’ve not learnt enough about a lot of the others given how bad the project from the top has been

@mixedknuts.bsky.social in your latest VB email the bet summary for the Mexico goal lines is the opposite to the bet in the explanations bit, could you let me know which you actually meant for the over/under, please?

Interesting, thanks! I was surprised, obviously I’m biased but I’d have thought England should probably be ~favourites given they’ve one of the best squads, tuchel struggleball seems a good fit for international football and we love meatwall. Look forward to reading about it!

Why do you think your model rates England’s chances as so much lower than the bookies- think they have England at about 11%?

Somewhat adjacent to this stylistically is Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton which might tick some of these boxes and I can’t recommend highly enough

If it makes you feel better (not sure why it would), I thought it was excellent, and have reflected on it very frequently since reading as it’s been proven very prescient!

It’s why I’ve found it so frustrating to see otherwise YIMBY people posting this any time there’s a suggestion the government might do this. Like, yeah, you’re gonna need to and it’s not in and of itself bad if you also are trying to increase supply

Unfortunately for you, I’ve been causing the heater by not being around to bet for your massively winning weekends. Now that I’m on it with more regularity I’m sure it’ll crash back down to earth

I’ve actually never seen a tweet about left-antisemitism that doesn’t have an antisemitic reply. I’m sure they exist in theory but it’s fucking exhausting

It’s worth reading! The opening 40% is some real 10/10 stuff, it does sort of aimlessly peter out in final third but it’s a v enjoyable read overall

I really liked this article at the time and loved it rereading. Could not possibly agree more! I’ve always been helped when in need and I’ve had loads of great chats with strangers in the pub. Don’t come to my city, not observe the local customs, get in my space and call me rude for being annoyed!

It appears that starting an all out trade war with the country that controls the propaganda network a third of the country (not to mention primarily low info voters) uses was, in fact, a bad idea

you can have cult of personality-based authoritarian consolidation or you can blow up the economy and make everyone’s lives noticeably worse but it’s difficult to see how you manage both

Disneyland Paris is one of the most popular visitor attractions in Europe and it’s a few hundred miles away and rains marginally more than Bedfordshire and has more or less the same climate. It will be fine

dav1dn1man.bsky.social @dav1dn1man.bsky.social · 09/04/2025
It’s also unbearably hot for 4 months of the year, 100% humidity from may to September, with massive thunderstorms every day and the rides regularly closed for hours at a time. I think they’ll be able to manage a place where it rains gently less than half the year and is generally mild

dav1dn1man.bsky.social @dav1dn1man.bsky.social · 09/04/2025
The average annual rainfall in Orlando is 1351mm and it’s 609mm in Bedfordshire, the climate is generally mild and I think it would be fine

I’m a bit joking, and have gone from staunchly Ange in to a lot less so after that. But can see - he stays, the young players get better, we strengthen in 2-3 positions, have less awful injury luck, and those narrow losses become narrow wins or draws and we’re comfortably a good side next season

dav1dn1man.bsky.social @dav1dn1man.bsky.social · 03/04/2025
Me too, but if it makes you feel better, I just ran the numbers on the all important stat of number of games lost by more than a goal and we’re on track for our joint best ever PL season by that metric

We were obvs complete dogshit but tbf I think the number of away knockout games in Europe we’ve ever looked convincing in is barely more than a couple. Think a team of teenagers probably a bit overawed and we looked clueless and bad but not sure we can take too much away until after the home leg

dav1dn1man.bsky.social @dav1dn1man.bsky.social · 26/02/2025
Yeah, that would be good too and together get you half way probably. I’d favour a broad based tax rise, call it an NHS levy or something and then you could reallocate some new slack from the budget to defence. No harm in a few additional ones as you say

dav1dn1man.bsky.social @dav1dn1man.bsky.social · 26/02/2025
Think I’ll probably see less uptake on my favoured option of forcibly appropriating the WASPI’s homes and sending them all to the gulag digging the HS2 tunnels though

lol fair. Think you could lower the threshold to 2 or 300k and raise substantially more and can’t see it would piss anyone else off that matters to the Labour voting coalition. Or just doing it out of spite works for me too!

dav1dn1man.bsky.social @dav1dn1man.bsky.social · 26/02/2025
I can’t see how this would get more than like 10-15% of the way. Had a quick look and not loads of data but think there’s probably 30k earners in this bracket and even optimistically saying that gets you 100k each that’s £3bn and you need minimum £20bn probably?

Definitely! Not to mention if they want a reliable baseload and to successfully decarbonise the grid. It’s a shame though bc they’ve been making noises or introducing legislation in most of the growth areas in the piece but have been mostly silent (afaict) on nuclear when they should obviously do it
010
dav1dn1man.bsky.social @dav1dn1man.bsky.social · 22/01/2025
I thought this piece was absolutely excellent. I do think, to their credit, the government is doing stuff on a lot of these areas, but it’s a real shame they seem the furthest from doing anything on the nuclear stuff when it would be so hugely positive

In Downing Street, I was once lobbied to support a £200m per annum cut to beer duty, because it was “the best growth policy I could ask for”. You see, that £200m would go into drinkers&…

fascinated by a rhetorical strategy i see all the time now, which is making up an extreme edge case to argue against doing anything for the public good, and doing this from the putative left.
