The limited palette and the difference between ingame character art and portraits. It left a lot to the imagination but man did they manage to evoke it at the same time. Especially the golden jrpgs of that time did so much with so little. Especially Yoshitaka Amanos stuff was amazing!

I basically grew up in the late snes, early PS1 era and while I love many games that came out on later consoles (storytelling did definitely improve), there is just something missing now that was in those late 16bit, early 3d games.

This whole amazon ad preferences stuff reminds me of like 10 years ago when I was getting confused by weird ads I got on YouTube and looked up what Google knows about me. Apparently I was a woman in her 50s, interested in football and bicycles.

I am still working on State Vector, my hard science fiction tabletop rpg. It takes place in our solar system, as well as the nearby stars, and deals with how societies change over time. I have been working on this project for around 4 years now and it starts to shape up quite well.

Yeah, unfortunately they are the ones with the money... And right now they seem hellbent on milking the entire industry to the last drop leaving only ashes behind. Some seem to believe that AI will soon make the entire industry obsolete so they want to get as much cash as possible before than.

At one point you could have a simple box move around and say "look we implemented character movement", but now executives threaten to remove funding if the character doesn't look AAA quality in the first delivery.

While I 100%agree with you, for devs under a larger publisher this is often not an option. I saw monthly delivery quality being forced to rise to unsustainable and ridiculous levels for nearly a decade.

In general I think a little sound effect when a roll happens isn't that bad though, often there is a short pause anyway at the moment, so it doesn't distract very much I think.

So here's my completely unhelpful take on this: I watch/listen to APs for two reasons: I want to enjoy the story or I want to understand the system better. In the first case I don't care much for the rolls, in the latter case it's quite important to understand when and how rolls happen.

BoF did it first!!11 but in all seriousness it doesn't really matter more than that a few of the characters kinda appear in each installment, mostly the two main protagonists. The stories are only loosely related, apart from the core themes.

BoF 2 is a direct sequel to 1, 3 and 4 are standalone each*. I personally liked 4, but 3 is still my absolute favourite. :) hope you like them! * there is some "It's in the same universe, but later repeating timeline, Zelda stuff" there, but it's not really relevant.

Are tech or skill trees a thing in ttrpgs? Don't think I've seen many around, but I could be wrong. I'm trying to find a way to have societies with different technological capabilities without the linear Tech Levels of GURPS or Traveller. Right now a tech tree of tags is the best I came up with.
