I'm not sure exactly what's being referred to, but I think it's hard to look at top-two in practice and see anything like the salutary effects she claims.

If you think, with E.E. Schattschneider, that "modern democracy is unthinkable save in terms of the parties," then those questions will strike you as rather less clever than you seem to imagine. As it seems you do not, I shall not try in this forum to persuade you.

I talked to @gintautasd.bsky.social about why I, like almost all of us who study political parties, think top-two electoral systems are a bad idea. And stay for a little Mass. politics inside baseball: www.wbur.org/news/2026/09...

Mass. mayoral elections use all-party primaries. So what do mayors think of Question 3?
Question 3 supporters have pulled in a growing number of mayors who’ve witnessed top-two elections up close. But not everyone agrees that the system would translate well to state elections.

I am strangely optimistic that AI offers a framework to build the state we want. I argue in @dissentmag.bsky.social that progressives must not dismiss the energy and opportunity produced by technology’s productive amnesia to reimagine the state and society. dissentmagazine.org/article/ai-u...

Can the Welfare State Survive AI? - Dissent Magazine
The U.S. welfare state was built in moments when technical innovation collided with political reality. It can still offer the infrastructure for social protection under an economy reconfigured by AI.

A friend sent me this program from a Democratic rally in 1960 and it’s perfect: Joe Glazer, Nat’s brother, the labor folksinger; a cantor; and Pat Robertson’s father the virulently anti-civil rights Senator. What a party!

That seems both correct as far as it goes and--this is what a political scientist should understand--woefully limited as far as the problem of bad-faith critics putting point X at the center of the agenda as opposed to lots of other things.

In a general way: all the critiques about consumer-driven higher ed and too much sports, low standards outside arts and sciences and in most of the new civic thought initiatives, ill-informed boards meddling in faculty affairs, and censoring views on Israel-Palestine.

I may have used the term too loosely. Anyway, if the actual question is Democrats’ priority in 2029, no reason to do what polls say, but if you want to use polling data, better be sure it speaks to the issue at hand.
000
Daniel Schlozman @daschloz.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
To me, and I think we’re hitting on normative turf here, both about what’s worth maximizing and what parties+groups owe to voters, if the stakes are priority against other things, eg welfare state, under unified control in 2029, then that’s what should be tested and foregrounded.

That trade-off is exactly the point. And if GOP is so bad for climate, then maybe climate hushing makes some sense. More generally, my model has always been Bill Wilson’s arguments for universalism, where you don’t dwell too much on the precise beneficiaries lest it promote backlash.

110
Daniel Schlozman @daschloz.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
Right, but the climate pieces that actually lower costs rather than those that hide the ball.
110
Daniel Schlozman @daschloz.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
But doesn’t the paper suggest focusing on lowering costs and health care more than climate? And within climate on cost-reducing pieces like permitting reform?

Everybody has claimed--sometimes convincingly, sometimes not--to have the Democratic Party's best interests at heart in this mess. But for Platner to behave like this right now is pure selfish hostage-taking. And good on the state party ED to speak up on the party's behalf.

A convention would be a much better, and dare I say, fairer process than either letting Platner pass the factional baton or deciding that it's time for a different faction to have its turn. Very midcentury reform liberal in a good way. www.bangordailynews.com/2026/07/07/p...
