Sad for Taggart, but unfortunately these situations happen a lot with Vietnamese football. Teams don't do their recruitment well and the turnover for foreign players is very brutal, especially now that there are more money being spent in Southeast Asia.

Kinda make me feels sympathised for Sports Interactive and Football Manager devs a bit more because PES and Konami went through this exact same situation back in 2014, and the game didn't get better until maybe 2017 or 2018. The curse of yearly-released games I guess.

Currently going on a run of retro football games cause the state of modern football games feels shambolic, and I'm wondering if PES 21 deserves to be in the top 5 PES editions of all time.

It's a bit hilarious to see the reaction from the North Korean players afterwards. They couldn't believe that Brian outmusculed one of their defenders to score and was gonna protest the goal 😂

Villarreal are 9th in La Liga and just got outplayed by Real Betis, but their press is elite and they've flipped into a 61.7% possession side under Iñigo Pérez. Underlying numbers still point to a top-4 side, for now.

Did I spend 2 hours at night on Figma and painstakingly made a mockup of the Arch Linux plugins that I want to make in Lua? Yes I did. Did I also spend 2 hours looking at open source F1 data API? Yes I also did. Now to the harder part 😭

Finally moved to Arch Linux and finally understood when people say Arch gives you a kernel and maybe a shell built on top, then you're on your own with everything else. But damn, it's so good just to have an OS that I have full control over and figure things out on the way without using AI.

It's the same story for most of Asian football unfortunately. Many countries want short-term success or gains, so they chase things like friendlies with top countries or mass player naturalisation. Unless that mindset changes, it's hard to see a way to make progress as a whole continent.

No striker, no problem. Barcelona are 8 for 8 with a +24 goal difference and 4.5 goals a game, and they did it without replacing Lewandowski or Ferran Torres. • Rodri's arrival freeing up Pedri • Yamal's improved movement • Raphinha's 14 goals leading the line Plus: How long can this last?

TL;DR: The answer to that tweet is no, football analytics isn't solved. In fact, there's a lot more work to be done now that tracking data is entering the public sphere and different challenges faced by the industry. To borrow 2 quotes from last year's MIT Sloan Conference:

I wrote a bit about why football analytics is not actually 'solved', the problem with generating data using current AI (or more accurately, computer vision) models, and watching sports with AI is actually not as fun as many tech start-ups want you to think. www.talking-tactics.com/p/solving-fo...

This summer, MLS teams spent a record-breaking amount of money on player transfers: $188 million. That's a 65% increase year-over-year and takes the yearly total to over $410 million, twice what it was in 2022. I dug into the data for @theguardian.com: www.theguardian.com/football/202...

"Won't someone think of the end users for all these new tech?" Probably not a dominant thought for these tech/AI bros when they try to build a product to get investments from venture capitals and private equities while hitting none of the actual useful use cases.

Daryl @daryldao.com · 08/09/2026

Also I don't understand the 'watching sports is more fun with AI' part. From a fan's perspective, it even makes it boring cause you're constantly focusing away from the game. Tracking data is only useful and fun for the fans if it's being displayed in a fun and engaging way, not like that image.

At least I'm kinda glad that something like Parma's open source analytics hub opened the doors, even if it was just a little bit. But I'm also worry cause how much of that changed the perspective of the industry and can others be encouraged to do the same.
