Fernando Alonso has been staring at me and constantly disappointed by my lack of progress while I work on more functions for the plugins. Life is good aga

Did I spend 2 hours at night on Figma and painstakingly made a mockup of the Arch Linux plugins that I want to make in Lua? Yes I did. Did I also spend 2 hours looking at open source F1 data API? Yes I also did. Now to the harder part 😭

Finally moved to Arch Linux and finally understood when people say Arch gives you a kernel and maybe a shell built on top, then you're on your own with everything else. But damn, it's so good just to have an OS that I have full control over and figure things out on the way without using AI.

Something weird is happening with that match for sure...

TL;DR: The answer to that tweet is no, football analytics isn't solved. In fact, there's a lot more work to be done now that tracking data is entering the public sphere and different challenges faced by the industry. To borrow 2 quotes from last year's MIT Sloan Conference:

I continue to wonder how and why Fabian Reese is not a Bundesliga player yet after his performance in the past 5 seasons. He has carried a Hertha Berlin team on his back, was their best player by a miles, and he is doing that again with Wolfsburg.

Well, didn't expect this to start the week, especially when I'm trying not to use LinkedIn more. Long story short (and the secret is finally out), I did help Football Australia a bit with their data work during their preparation for the World Cup. At least now I can finally say it out loud 😅

At least it's good that a lot of football people and football analytics work are being done on mapping player names to reduce cases like this and the one below.

If anyone ever questions the quality of Opta's data, just show them this. Note: These two players are the same person. He just changed name after the naturalisation process and Opta seems to have not registered that.

I have no problem with this midfield from Leipzig, especially with how decent Vermeeren is looking as a deep-lying playmaker. But who is gonna do the defending lol

Another one, I like @futi.live's passing dashboard so much so I decided to make my own. Debuting on my blog...whenever the ASEAN Championship group stage finishes, hopefully 🤞

Small teaser on what I'm working on! So far, Mitchell Baker has been a fox in the box for Indonesia, using his height and pace to be in good positions to find goal-scoring opportunities to score. Doesn't need to involve in progressing yet cause Indonesia have good midfielders and wingers.
A visualisation depicting Mitchell Baker's shot location on the pitch (including goals, shots on target, shots that hit the post, was blocked, or was off target) and on the goal, along with a pie chart highlighting the total number of shots for each category.A football pitch heatmap showing all of Mitchell Baker's touches during the 2026 ASEAN Championship group stage, highlighting his tendency to make touches inside and on the edge of the penalty box from a total of 71 touches in 230 minutes played.

No defence from midfield, just vibes and an abundance of chance creating ability.

Lens' recruitment have gone under the radar very often, but it is one of the key reasons why they are doing so well. Finding young and promising French and African talents is one aspect, but don't forget how they have rejuvenated careers of many players that were thought to be washed.

Everton will be getting a very exciting talent and arguably one of the future Matildas stars with Holly McNamara. She is a very prolific goalscorer who is also good at dribbling, which means she can be used both as a central forward and as a winger on both sides. #BarclaysWSL

So, uh, I wrote this back in 2019. Did not expect that 3 Spanish players that I mentioned here + the subject of this article (Ferran Torres) would deliver them their first World Cup after 16 years.

Hmm I wonder what kind of Indonesia All Stars team will be when they face Aston Villa, considering most of their best domestic players will be with the national team just two days after and their foreign-based players will already be deep into pre-season with their clubs.
Aston Villa's 2026 pre-season schedule, including fixtures against Walsall (July 21 @ Walsall), Porto (July 25 @ Porto), Real Sociedad (July 28 @ Walsall), Indonesia All Stars (August 01 @ Jakarta), BG Pathum United (August 04 @ Pathum Thani), Bayern Munich (August 07 @ Hong Kong), PSG in the UEFA Super Cup (August 12 @ Salzburg), and Borussia Monchengladbach (August 15 @ Monchengladbach).Indonesia's national football team's match against Vietnam in Round 4 of the ASEAN Championship Group A, which will be played on the 3rd of August (23:30 UTC+10).

Some of that money went into the A-League All Access series too, which, I think, was one of the best pieces of content about the A-League since I got into watching the league. All of these videos are free to watch on YouTube btw. youtube.com/playlist?lis...

Ok I have a bit more to say about this. Saying that $40m was used by KeepUp to pay just for the app is very wrong. Yes, they used some of that money for the app, but there was also the website, paying for a lot of top-tier Aussie writers at that point to produce good articles and content.

I was literally in the middle of writing an article that talks a bit about Hertha and how trusting their academy is yielding results. They have a lot of promising youngsters who have potential, and they just need to add more quality to the team to actually challenge for a promotion.

ohh Guus Til's single season on loan with Freiburg. a bit sad that it didn't work out considering how good he currently is after returning to the Netherlands with Feyenoord and PSV. would have been so nice to see Grifo, Demirovic and a good version of Til in the same team destroying the Bundesliga.

going from that incredible lineup of keepers to this destructible lineup of strikers from Hertha Berlin that scored a total of...*checks stats*...16 goals to help Hertha finished in 16th, saved themselves in the playoff only to go straight down in 18th the next season.

Daryl @daryldao.com · 15/07/2026
kinda surprised that at one point Mainz had this keeper lineup of Finn Dahmen (current #1 for Augsburg), Florian Müller, Jannik Huth (Freiburg's current #2 & #3), Robin Zentner (Mainz's current #1) and René Adler (Germany's early-2010s #1).

From the 4 pen shootouts, only 6 out of 8 captains took a pen, 🇳🇱's Virgil van Dijk and 🇨🇴's James Rodriguez didn't take one. Conversion rate was kinda mixed, 🇦🇺's Harry Souttar and 🇲🇦's Achraf Hakimi missed theirs while taking the 1st and 4th penalty for their team, all others converted theirs.

also i hate double posting myself, but i have to call this out. there's a new article on The Athletic about channel runs, and definitely no one made an entire presentation about that exact channel run for the 2023 Opta Forum.

This is a problem with football in general, so many people come in to different football departments and want to change everything. What happened to the culture of 'standing on the shoulders of giant' and respect what was done in the past?

Daryl @daryldao.com · 08/07/2026
Also for my curiosity, I suspected that left-footed players still preferred to aim at the opposite side of the goal, and vice versa. Yeah, that was pretty much what happened from the 4 penalty shootouts so far in the #WorldCup26.
110
Daryl @daryldao.com · 08/07/2026
Just for funsies cause I'm a data nerd and I'm curious. The conversion rate for centre-backs after 4 penalty shootouts so far this #WorldCup is very low (40%), while attacking midfielders and wingers are leading the way for penalties converted in a shootout (80% both).

Probably won't get a mention anywhere so I'll mention him anyway. Nathan Ngoy was very good at the back for Belgium, was everywhere to make challenges, intercept passes, and stop Balogun from actually playing, especially when Mechele was kinda meh. Data: @futi.live

I also wanna give credit to how Rice, Bellingham, Gordon and Rogers defended zone 14 and the area outside of the box as well. Mexico could not pick up any second balls in dangerous areas, could not make any cutbacks, nor could they make any dangerous long shots to test Pickford. Data: @futi.live
Mexico (green) and England (red)'s shot map with Mexico registered 19 shots, 2 big chances and 9 dangerous attacks, while England registered 6 shots, 2 big chances and 4 dangerous attacks.

Hmmm seems like Nike will be reusing this pattern again a lot next season. It's already appearing on Freiburg and Besiktas' kits and I don't think they will be the only two who use this kit pattern.

Probably a good description for a second striker-esque player like Manzambi and even Ismael Saibari honestly. I know Saibari has been used as a striker this WC, but he started off at PSV as a #10 and mostly played behind Guus Til at PSV. Elversberg/Leverkusen's Onyeka fits this as well.

Daryl @daryldao.com · 03/07/2026
Two examples that I can find who have made a move this transfer window are Genk's Jeppe Erenbjerg and Elversberg's Francis Onyeka. Both very skillful, can dribble with the ball, is somewhat a box crasher, and scores a lot of goals just by crashing into the centre of the box.

This is the state of LinkedIn football content btw, just AI graphics literally everywhere and for the simplest, most basic post like this one. It's so discouraging to see these type of content and graphics being made and get more engagement than hard-working, originally made contents.

Small rant: How hard is it to find an image of Roger Schmidt working with the J.League that people on LinkedIn still chooses to use OpenAI's tool to generate an image of Roger Schmidt and it's not even the correct league in the background?
