I wonder if this is the opposite of the nostalgia bias where you remember movies/books/whatever as being better than they actually are. Anti-nostalgia. I also wonder if I should try rewatching other movies I hated back then.

Rewatched Ghibli's Tales from Earthsea with the kids yesterday. I hated it when I saw it in the cinema 20 years ago. But turns out it's actually... not that bad?I mean, it's still confusing and the tone is... bleak, but artistically it's still quite enchanting. Kinda Ghibli's The Black Cauldron.

If I were a coach I would occasionally say to the referees "You're right we did commit a foul there" instead of arguing all the time. This builds my credibility as an objective interlocutor in their minds

Being deeply interested in What The Hell Is Wrong With Germany, the Miscikowski et al. study where we have the highest level of "narcissistic rivalry" in their sample (doi.org/10.1080/1529...) made me wonder how this shaped me, in the sense that I've learned to abhor competition and zero-sum games.

I was trying to contrast the different terms. Of course they also have a lot in common - "complicated" appears to be a shared property, assuming that witchcraft is complicated.

Dario Paape @dariopaape.eurosky.social · 20/05/2026
Interesting! So if the meaning of the idiom is "Don't worry, the thing in question is not X", where X is something "scary", EN basically has "complicated", DE has "irrational" and PL has... maybe "abstract"?

Dario Paape @dariopaape.eurosky.social · 20/05/2026
Wondering if we can learn something by looking at different cultures' equivalents of the idiom "It's not rocket science". German has "It's not witchcraft" - different because it evokes something arcane/irrational rather than just "very complicated". What does your language use? #linguistics

I just read that as "bist-able" and didn't know what to do with it. :D But more to the point, in my case I think I've meta'd it so much that I can't un-meta it now and get a proper intuition anymore. I can semi-laboriously work out both readings but neither jumps out at me.

Dario Paape @dariopaape.eurosky.social · 02/05/2026
Oh, and I think it's probably slightly different meanings of "is/equals" as well.
000
Dario Paape @dariopaape.eurosky.social · 02/05/2026
I genuinely think both are fine in this case! It simply depends on what you take "dog year" and "human year" to mean. ;)

Dario Paape @dariopaape.eurosky.social · 02/05/2026
Still, at first I was completely committed to A while she was completely committed to B, and we both thought the other was crazy.
110
Dario Paape @dariopaape.eurosky.social · 02/05/2026
When I first discussed these with my wife, I was like "you can't just go 'one meter is 1000 kilometers' and it's fine!". But here you have units (dog year, human year) that are not lexically defined, so you can change their meaning to get either version to work.
110
Dario Paape @dariopaape.eurosky.social · 02/05/2026
Yes! That's why I find this example so fascinating. But it turns out you can pragmatically (?) engineer both versions to make sense.
010
Dario Paape @dariopaape.eurosky.social · 01/05/2026
At first I didn't grasp the logic behind B either, but it was explained to me as follows: a "dog year" is a time unit that is 1/7 of a standard (human) year. So for each human year, seven dog years pass, in which the dog ages as much as a human does in one human year.

Dario Paape @dariopaape.eurosky.social · 01/05/2026
Small experiment: Which of the following statements makes more sense to you? A) "One dog year is/equals seven human years" or B) "One human year is/equals seven dog years", or C) both are fine. #linguistics

The German etymology is apparently subject to debate, though. Some sources say "trut" (pronounced "troot") is meant to evoke the sound they make. Also the "from India/Turkey/Wales (?)" approach seems to have been a thing in German in the 16th century.

Chat, what do we know about agreement attraction from inside NN compounds? Or maybe something else is happening here. AA on possessives is always interesting to me because it's the kind of error that I subjectively feel I would never conceivably make, because it just feels so... wrong.

So when done in bad faith, it's just a straw man strategy - distorting the actual argument so that it becomes easier to defeat.

Dario Paape @dariopaape.eurosky.social · 06/03/2026
I suspect that in some cases it's a rhetorical strategy people use to sidestep the methodological criticisms - "So you're saying I'm wrong??" puts you on the defensive, especially when the conclusions are plausible.

000
Dario Paape @dariopaape.eurosky.social · 28/01/2026
It's not so much an issue of clarity - I was able to understand the intended meaning. It's more a question of whether it's possible to formulate the sentence like this - if I say "John go school", it's also clear what I mean, but it's still not correct. To me, the sentence immediately "felt wrong".
