This, from Alito’s dissent re #birthrightcitizenship, is a pretty weak reading of Coke’s report. But the Thomas/Alito account of “subjecthood” as strictly feudal is also a pretty silly view of English legal history.

I’m not saying it means anything or whatever, but when the baby fusses, she’s most quickly soothed by the idea that “the city comes into being for the sake of living, but exists for the sake of living well.” She is totally uninterested in whether you like that translation though.

This, from Constantin’s Fasolt’s “History, Law, and Justice: Empirical Method and Conceptual Confusion in the History of Law,” (UC Irvine Law Review, 2015) is the best thing I have read on what it means to tell the truth about the past. (About 20 pages separate the last image from the others).

in the last few years I stopped treating pleas about false equivalence seriously and started treating them as a tell - the speaker has given up trying to actually defend the behavior we're talking about, hoping that they can distract you with some other, worse behavior offscreen

This coat—and the strong and quiet man who wore it as he carried bags of coal past the front window of my house; this was the herald angel of an Irish Christmas in the 1980s. Aside from her acute moral vision, I’m always astonished by Claire Keegan’s ability to revive this era.
