Took many pictures during my fall 2023 visiting professorship at Peking Univ. Here's the iconic Reclining Shakyamuni Buddha entering Nirvana at the Dazu Rock Carvings in Chongqing, PRC, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (dated 9th-13th centuries) with a blend of Buddhist, Confucian & Taoist influences.
The Dazu Rock Carvings in Chongqing, China, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, date from the 9th to 13th centuries and showcase a blend of Buddhist, Confucian, and Taoist influences. The reclining Buddha depicted in the images represents Shakyamuni Buddha entering Nirvana, surrounded by disciples and bodhisattvas symbolizing reverence and enlightenment. These carvings, renowned for their artistic excellence, provide insight into the religious practices and cultural values of Tang and Song China, highlighting the harmonious coexistence of spiritual traditions.
