I'm grateful to be a recipient of the Canada's NSERC Postdoctoral Research Award. And lastly, I am also grateful for my village of academic friends who've been my letter writers and general support through this process.

I am so excited to announce that I have started a postdoctoral fellowship at Princeton University, working with Reed Maxwell and Jeff McDonnell! Together, we're tackling questions about how groundwater quality is changing, and how transit times and time lags shape these long-term trajectories.

For over 15 years the McMaster Ecohydro Lab has awarded the #NobelPeatPrize to the authors of the best peatland or peat paper of the year. It’s that time of year again where we review papers and finalize a list of nominees. Do you have a fave paper for 2025 you would like us to consider?

Spent seven days on the West Coast Trail, hiking across incredible landscapes with amazing people. I feel lucky to be able to immerse myself in nature and witness all the earth's processes around me. To be an earth scientist and be able to see and hear the earth is such a gift.
Photo of three women sitting around a fire. The picture is framed and the fire is mostly hidden by large pieces of drift wood. The past 6 years have been full of challenges, lots of caretaking, and burning the candle at both ends, trying (and many times failing) to keep the balls in the air. I got some fresh snow in CO and I found myself giggling, as I floated through the powder and moved around the trees. Pure catharsis.

Been quiet on here lately. I have been intentionally carving out time post-PhD to have fun, take a breath, and finish up some remaining papers. Started off the break with a cross Canada-US trip in my van to ski, hike, and camp, from Ontario through the Pacific Northwest down to Colorado. ⛷️🥾

When asked why I studied the US instead of Canada, my answer was always the same: the US had more data and better data management. I am feeling devastated watching as agencies' websites go dark... I can't help but feel like the sheer loss of data will thwart the progress of our science.

GRAD POSITION: MSc position aquatic ecology and conservation at Laurentian University w/ flexible start date. Contact Brie Edwards (see ALT text) for more details #AcademicSky
We are currently seeking a MSc domestic student (i.e. Canadian citizen or permanent resident) to join a cohort of newly recruited HQP. The project will focus on developing and testing novel stream biomonitoring methods incorporating eDNA to assay community membership from microbes to fish. These rapid bioassessment techniques will be tested against traditional approaches in their ability to produce functional, community and multi-trophic indicators of ecosystem integrity and biodiversity along a gradient of impact recovery. The student will be hosted at Laurentian University (Dr. Brie Edwards) and co-supervised by Dr. Erik Emilson (Natural Resources Canada). Field work will begin in Spring of 2025 and will be conducted in the Sudbury area. As such we are recruiting a student interested in starting May 2025. Ideal candidates will have a strong background in aquatic ecology and an interest in benthic bioindicators, molecular techniques, and population and community responses to environmental change. Quantitative skills in statistical analysis are desired but can be provided through training programs at the respective institutions. Interested students should send a CV, cover letter expressing interest and relevant skills, as well as a copy of unofficial transcripts to Brie Edwards (bedwards2@laurentian.ca). Please include “CRADLES graduate interest” as the subject line.

Yeah, I definitely agree. Esp. applies to someone like yourself who can communicate their work well (I always liked your talks!) But also, I remember hearing 15 minute talks that were also inaccessible, so I feel like length is only a part of it.

And I think there is probably room for both at AGU, but IMO I don’t see the point of gathering diverse range of scientist in the same room if we don’t make the effort to communicate methods and findings with each other.
