This newsletter subject line by @katiemalone.bsky.social! Her PA records request came back with extensive redactions. We appealed and got parts unredacted — including a pitch deck for TECfusions' data center development But TECfusions sued to block the release. Case ongoing, thanks to @rcfp.org 🤩

I’m getting sued by a data center
The developer is fighting to keep its pitch deck to state officials secret. The accountability implications are bigger than just one project.

Top level troll. I'm impressed.
This X post claiming an AI-generated image was made “in the style of a Monet painting” and the poster asked people to explain why it is inferior to a real Monet. The embedded image is a water lilies painting, labeled “Made with AI.” But it was actually a real Claude Monet painting, posted as a social experiment to spark debate about AI art, authenticity and whether viewers can reliably distinguish human-made art from AI-generated images.

Maya Angelou on the joys of being edited
I’ve had the same editor since 1967. Many times he has said to me over the years or asked me, Why would you use a semicolon instead of a colon? And many times over the years I have said to him things like: I will never speak to you again. Forever. Goodbye. That is it. Thank you very much. And I leave. Then I read the piece and I think of his suggestions. I send him a telegram that says, OK, so you’re right. So what? Don’t ever mention this to me again. If you do, I will never speak to you again

Opinion polls without human opinion behind them are dangerous and dumb, yes. But why use derogatory framing like “the computational whiz kids behind silicon sampling”? Undermines the whole piece and makes it clear the author doesn’t want to change minds, just rant.

Screenshot of a Sherwood News article headlined "Google releases blockbuster white paper that spells quantum uncertainty for a whole lot of bitcoin." The article reports that Google researchers found quantum machines will require fewer resources in the future to break classical cryptography — a twentyfold reduction — posing a potential threat to blockchain-backed cryptocurrencies including bitcoin. It includes a quote from Alex Pruden, CEO of quantum computing research firm Project Eleven, saying the architecture "could crack a private key in 9 minutes, while bitcoin blocks take 10 minutes on average."

Found the Library of Congress "American Revolution and Founding Washington" free to use and reuse collection and fell down the rabbit hole of the Eagle Map
An old, sepia-colored map of the early United States (the left half of the continent trails off into nothing) with an eagle sketched over the rough shape of the eastern states: talons atop florida, beak as Cape Cod, tail fluffing back to Louisiana and the Appalachains forming the mark where the wings begin to stretch back.

Oh my god yes
imagine there’s a different currency in mind and trust isn’t what we really need from audiences. We want people to read and think, to question and provide feedback. We want them to keep reading, and realize one article can’t — and shouldn’t — provide them with everything they need to know.
