BOWIE+ Seminar Series @bowieseminar.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
The BOWIE+ seminar autumn schedule is out! Next week, we will begin with a talk by Matthäus Schulik of Imperial on his work on atmospheric escape. The rest of the autumn will be highlight talks by early career researchers. To get the zoom links, see the details in our bio. #exoplanets #astronomy
Upper left: A picture of Matthäus Schulik in front of ruins. To the right, the title of his upcoming talk -- From bulk to space -- on September 10th. Below, a table of other upcoming talks from October until December.
Bottom: text describing the BOWIE+ Collaboration: "We are a UK based collaboration with a focus on studying the atmospheres of exoplanets using the James Webb Space Telescope. We work together to create proposals for JWST GO time, holding both in-person and virtual collaborative meetings. If you are interested in getting involved, please reach out via our email: bowie.collaboration@gmail.com"

MPIA PhD student Angelique Kahle has a very cool paper out today looking at everyone's favourite ultra-hot Jupiter, WASP-121b. Angelique is giving a talk on the results next Monday at Exoplanets VI, as well. #exoplanets arxiv.org/abs/2606.21855

The panchromatic JWST dayside spectrum of WASP-121 b reveals a refractory-rich formation
One path to understand how planets form is to link their present-day atmospheric composition to predictions from planet formation models. For the hottest planets, the abundances of refractory species ...

Magnesium Silicate Clouds in the Atmosphere of HD 209458b from a Rule-Based Tree-Structured Data Reduction
HD 209458b is the canonical hot Jupiter: the first to have its atmosphere measured and the first to hint at the role of aerosols in exoplanet atmospheres through the muting of Na absorption signatures...

Published in #MNRAS: "Eclipse mapping with Ariel: future prospects for a population-level mapping survey", Valentine et al. This is Fig. 2: for the caption & to read the paper please visit academic.oup.com/mnras/articl... @royalastrosoc.bsky.social @academic.oup.com
HD 189733b eclipse maps, with flux profiles shown above. The cross and dashed line mark the location of the substellar point, whilst the star and dash-dotted line mark the location of the hotspot. Left: Simulated version of the JWST MIRI/LRS map, derived from two eclipses (M. Lally et al. 2025). Middle: Equivalent Ariel AIRS Ch1 map, also derived from two eclipse observations. Right: Difference map (JWST–Ariel). The flat structure shows that we recover consistent thermal structures between the instruments, although with a slightly shallower day–night gradient for the latter as a consequence of its smaller bandwidth (see the text). The overlap of the differenced hotspot with the substellar point shows that we accurately and precisely recover this key parameter.

It was great getting to share these exciting results as part of the BOWIE+ seminar series. Ariel has the potential to revolutionise our 3D understanding of exoplanet atmospheres, with a phase curve survey of ~100 targets within its reach. Let’s push to make it happen!

Eclipse Mapping with Ariel: Future Prospects for a Population-Level Mapping Survey
Eclipse mapping is a powerful tool for measuring 3D profiles of exoplanet atmospheres. To date, only JWST has been capable of widely applying this technique, but as a general observatory, it is too ti...

Excited to share the 1st direct evidence of quartz clouds in the atmosphere of a transiting #exoplanet! With #JWST MIRI we found nanoparticles of quartz, SiO2, causing a spike in the planet's spectrum at 8.6 micron unveiling the Oxygen locked in the clouds doi.org/10.3847/2041...
