‘A lot of DSA candidates don’t actually want socialism, they just want America to have a Nordic style social democracy inside capitalism.’ I keep seeing people make this argument to try and blunt the ‘socialist’ aspect of the DSA. There is a term for that, and it’s not democratic socialism.

Social democracy and democratic socialism both want a fair society with less poverty, but they treat capitalism differently. Social democracy keeps a capitalist economy while using high taxes to fund a large welfare system. Democratic socialism wants to replace capitalism with public or worker ownership of major industries, using democratic voting instead of a revolution.

I’m sure there are endless reasons to hate the gig economy, but I will forever treasure it for the one reason that I don’t have to ask a human being that I love and want the best for to wake up at 4:30 in the morning to drive me to the airport. And I get to give the person that does it a fat tip.
