...and I've been told if I want that, I'm railroading my players and should just write a book. The hilarious thing is my background is writing. If I WANTED to write a book, I would. I play these kinds of games specifically so I can get the kinds of experiences I wouldn't crafting prose.

I often get the same impression. It seems a lot of people deep in the RPG scene hate the 'game' part of RP*G* and treat it more as this abstraction in service to a purely narrative bent. The irony is I prefer tactics combat-leaning RPGs with tighter balance and less room to break the game...

While I wasn't too hot on the class itself, Prop as a trait was one of those ideas that works so well that I'm sad it will probably never be integrated as an evergreen system-wide mechanic, it just has so much potential creatively and gameplay wise.

This comes back to what I was saying a few weeks ago about how VIs were handled vs. AIs in Mass Effect. Knowing something is not sentient goes a long way to avoiding the issues with emotionally associating with them. You can look at Clippy and think he's cute, but understand he's not real.

If you're not having fun not by of any fault of the designers but because you're just an insatiable content beast that only cares about that constant influx of in-game rewards, then nothing will ever make you happy because the lack of satisfaction is the inherent reason for that engagement loop.

It's why I stopped playing MMOs after I got medicated for ADHD; when the dopamine hit stopped being the only factor, low-effort content stopped being enjoyable. It's why I farm relics in WF on conjunction nodes instead of speedrunning Titania; I have more fun trying different loadouts on those maps

It's the same with gaming. It's one thing to say 'I don't like this particular end game mode', but if the designers make another mode you're just going to optimize the fun out of purely for the sake of getting the drops at the end, you're not really playing the game for itself anymore.

It's something I've begun to realize even just day-to-day regarding the discussions around AI. When efficiency and the end result becomes paramount at the expense of experiencing the process, you just end up being responsible for your own loss of value and purpose. That's how zombification happens.

Are you doing it for completionism? Just for the sake of maxxing out all your arcanes/mods/shards on all your frames? Are you just going to run more EDA/ETA but use those more kitted-out frame and weapon loadouts to work around modifier combos and try it with different player options?

Like cool WF players, you don't like Archimedea, but you feel compelled to run it every week and cheeze Hild because it has good drops. Except that's one of the premier end game modes, so...what are you farming the drops for? There's little to no progression past that.

One of the reasons I'm becoming so cynical about gaming is how many people engage with content they seem to resent, but do so for the sake of item drops they'll use for other content that...they're not going to enjoy but do for more drops. So many players really have become zombified slop consumers

Yeah, there's a class I'm working on for some 3pp work that is very much a case of stealth 'I'm including a bunch of stuff I'd put in my dream wizard rebuild', but it's hard because you know you can't also just invalidate the wizard like that.
