Hell yes, Cranston Public Library! 🤩 Full article: www.nytimes.com/interactive/...
Librarians are defenders of democracy. We’re defenders of the freedom to read. We’re protectors of patron privacy. Libraries are one of the few places in this surveillance economy that are not trying to collect and sell your data to come and use our facilities. And I find, increasingly, that librarians have to be advocates for our communities.

Back of the envelope calculations: 3600 years of research time went into the collective application process. The research will fund 3200 years of research. We are 400 research years poorer as a result of this. 1/2

🚨Update: Our analysis of global APC expenditure has now been expanded to cover more publishers (7 -> 14) and more years (2019-2025). We estimate $15B in APCs paid over seven years, $3.7B in 2025 alone. Elsevier crosses the $1B threshold by itself in 2025. arxiv.org/abs/2608.16322 #ScholComm

Quick PSA. Looking at you, local orgs and small businesses.
Crudely drawn bunny character holding a pencil, messy hand lettering surrounds them in orange to green gradient color. It says in all caps:

Stop using AI for your flyers & logos! They look like shit, everybody thinks so! Seriously, you’re losing business. Just make it yourself or hire a real artist.

"The journal roughly doubled its publication volume from nearly 5,000 articles in 2023 to over 9,600 in 2024, and published over 10,300 articles in 2025." Good illustration of why commercial publishers are not passive victims of fraudulent behaviour but have actively created the conditions for it.

slow day in the office so we're starting beef with archaeologists
One of those 'STOP DOING X' memes, ripping into archaeology. It has images of soil stratum, a trowel, and a flint shard. The text mocks archaeologists for digging for pottery sherds and saying everything has a 'ritual purpose'.

It requires expertise to be able to say, “I do not know the answer to that question, and that is becauae thus far scholarly consensus is that we do not have the knowledge needed at this time to answer that question.” Sometimes “I don’t know” is a far more rigorous answer than people might think.

Hi, I'm Dan Rudmann, a librarian at Utrecht University.
From where I sit in the university, we see how much labor in academia goes unrecognised or simply unseen. ResearchEquals provides a meaningful way for people to work out loud. This is crucial if we aim to have an honest conversation about what it takes to produce knowledge.

1/ In 2024, I filed a false claims act lawsuit against Elsevier, Springer, Wiley & Informa alleging they systematically overcharged US federal grants for article processing. The gov declined to intervene and now it's public. Some thoughts on what this is, and what it isn't:

Austin Sarat is really really lovely and cares a lot about Open Access - you should write to him (he's a professor at Amherst College) and let him know you appreciate his work as I think he'd really appreciate you and engaging with you. I got to meet him once and it was unforgettable

I think perhaps it could even be squaring the circle between 1) information is meant to be free and 2) intellectual labour is worthy of renumeration. This what, I think in the most generous reading, an Open Access perspective was striving to address before the big publishers got involved

Setting universities up to fail is a longstanding tactic known as 'starving the beast' - a university's resources are undermined so it cannot live up to its obligations and is then punished for that by further resource cuts. See Steve Mims' 2016 documentary film: youtu.be/4IlFhJ78QdU?...

This is a key node in the battle for democracy and the survival of our planet - fostering education and research on HOW humans assign meaning to facts, how we create and contextualise information, how we infuse knowledge into everyday decisions and interventions.

If it was read, then it would compel some engagement. Instead, it benefits many actors in this space to have a potemkin document that has all the signals of prestige and rigour that they can be wave toward vaguely to justify dismantling a department or program.

Austin became what it is because every tech company that moved to town promised their workers an incredible art-focused town- where people were happy and singing songs to each other on these uncanny cowboy-hippy hills. They have a stake in keeping Austin weird on its own terms. Pay up and sit down.

Selling out is still selling out - it's still diminishing an artists' creative power to someone else just because that person has has money. It confuses money with taste, but we know better.

Once considered evil, panelists agreed corporate support might be one of the best ways to protect the artists and venues that make Austin unique.

OH MY HEART...the Oberlin Luddites Reject "The Year of AI Exploration"! 💚
photograph or a poster on cream colored paper. "Dear President Ambar,
we are writing to you on a typewriter that is over 70 years old. This is a
machine that we all know well. With it, we misspell words without the crutch of spell check or generative AI and we think intently about every phrase we pound out. As we force ourselves, for once, to slow down, we engage in a cognitive dialogue with ourselves. We do not seek perfection because we know that education is about the growing and challenging of our young minds' potential, not the chasing of institutional 'gold-star' approval. We do not believe that your so-called 'Year of AI Exploration; providing enterprise ChatGPT and Google Gemini subscriptions to every Oberlin student aligns with our college's founding principles. You claim that this year will be one of experimentation, not adoption. But even just one semester of accepted (encouraged even) chat bot use will jettison our student body down a lazy and irredeemable tunnel of intellectual destruction. We are a college grounded in learning and labor, which now risks straying from these rooted ideals. With ChatGPT at the helm, our emails, essays, and discussion posts will be generated for us, not by us. And let's not fool ourselves. This is precisely what these platforms will be used for by our busy, anxious student body. We see your vision for this year as.advancing the college's 'businessification'--an alarming trend also seen in the takeover of our beloved library cafe by a 'bookstore' with no books in stock and an app replacing customer service. In one instance, the college assumes we want efficiency at all costs through automated rather than hand pulled coffee. In the other lies the false belief that we simply desire to turn in an essay, regardless of how little we've written of it." there's more that doesn't fit in the 2000 character limit :(
