Spare a thought for all your #biochemist friends today. They spent years trying to convince cell biologists that a Bunsen burner creates a sterile field. Time for everyone to move into the biosafety cabinet! 🧫🔬 journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/...

It is crazy to think that scientists (and marmots) have to resort to #OnlyFans for funding. Closing the program would mean decades of investment would be wasted. I hope the publicity helps them get sufficient money to keep the program going. #sciencefunding #onlyMarms #science

I have heard and read a lot about the pressures on the peer review system. Yet, it still hits hard when you see that 15 reviewers have been contacted and only 2 have agreed to review my paper 🙃. #science #PeerReview

Very proud to share our new preprint! 🔬 We looked at how AQP4 water channel localization impacts cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA). We discovered that displacing AQP4 slowed disease decline in a prion-CAA mouse model. 🧵👇

Sometimes lawmakers and commentators mock a wasteful study about how flies mate. 🪰 Sometimes, that research saves ranchers billions and ends a biological nightmare. The @radiolab.bsky.social episode on the screwworm fly is a masterclass in why basic research is the backbone of society. 🧵

Congress rejected massive cuts to US science budgets for 2026, but much of the money still isn’t flowing to researchers. The culprit? The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is quietly slow-walking the release of funds. 🧵👇

Grant rejections are rough 😓. Grant rejections when a reviewer mentions that you are not a good candidate because of your career stage and independence level, even when that is not a requirement for the grant, hit harder than expected 🫩. @reviewer3com.bsky.social #research #academia

If you are submitting an NIH grant in February, you will be required to use SciENcv to prepare you biosketch. IT IS MUCH WORSE THAN YOU CAN POSSIBLY IMAGINE. Set aside *at least* 4 hours just to transfer an existing an biosketch into SciENcv.

This @wsj.com article highlights the slowdown in Boston, but anecdotally other biotech hubs, such as San Diego and San Francisco, are facing similar downturns 📉. Is this the usual "boom and bust" cycle, or a structural shift in the industry and waning US science support?🤔 www.wsj.com/tech/biotech...

New updates from NIH to tackle application backlogs: 1. Meetings cut to one day; only the top 30-35% are discussed. 2. The top third, and middle third ("competitive but NOT discussed") will both considered for funding 3. Scores released fast; simplified Summary Statements later. #NIH #ScienceFunding
