Totally agree. If you cannot identify a problem how can you put the tools in place to address it? As an outsider you can understand how the “egalite” bit must rankle for many, even though most French can’t or won’t see it.

As an aside, when in Paris I always questioned where were the professionals (lawyers, doctors, accountants, bankers, financiers, academics,even). Compared to the UK they were visually and practically nonexistent.

His time as a tank driver with the King's Royal Hussars was remarkably brief and entirely devoid of distinction; his military career came to an ignominious and clumsy halt not in the heat of combat, but when he managed to dislocate his own kneecap during a basic bayonet drill. He was medically discharged before he ever saw a shred of active service or set foot on a foreign battlefield. To use this short-lived training mishap to build a persona of military machismo is a supreme insult to those who have actually served. It takes an extraordinary amount of nerve to play the battle-hardened commander when your only operational casualty was your own leg during a practice run.
