This is really something: using the longest available data (1971–2019) and disentangling causal influences, a tropical forest is shown to have flipped from a carbon sink to a carbon source due to increasingly extreme temperatures & cyclones!!!

It turns out we shouldn't expect #eDNA to capture local diversity/composition of tropical trees but rather broad patterns across regions. Together with a fairly coarse taxonomic resolution, the utility of eDNA for biodiversity monitoring of tropical forest trees is probably limited.

Extinction of experience among ecologists
Fieldwork-based research and education in ecology are under multiple threats and are progressively declining. We call for greater attention to this ongoing loss of direct field experience within the ecology community, as it could have widespread consequences for science and education, ultimately hindering efforts to address the ongoing biodiversity crisis.

Highlights
The fossil record suggests that climate change was the major driver of plant extinctions and regional extirpations from the Pliocene until recently, when anthropogenic habitat loss became dominant.
Known recent plant extinctions are disproportionately few in comparison with well-studied animal taxa, but many more species are probably committed to inevitable extinction unless given targeted support.
Recent warm-edge extirpations demonstrate the growing impact of anthropogenic climate change and show that predictions of massive climate-driven extinctions later this century are plausible.
The proximate causes for population extirpations are still rarely known but are likely to be highly varied and both species and location specific."
