RIP Annie Dillard, one of the true greats. I was reading ‘Living Like Weasels’ for the umpteenth time only last night, urged to return to it perhaps by the energy of a cosmic coincidence. “We are here to witness. There is nothing else to do with those mute materials we do not need.”

Annie Dillard RIP. I teach parts of Tinker Creek. And I also point students towards Alexander Chee’s excellent essay on being taught by Annie Dillard. You can read it here: themorningnews.org/annie-dillar...

Deirdre Shanahan, one of the writers whose work is published by Splice, passed away last month. I’ve written a brief note of appreciation for Deirdre’s work here, and a pair of new short stories I was editing with her are available today at 3:AM… danieldaviswood.substack.com/p/in-memoria...

I had the pleasure of writing about Alan Fyfe’s latest novel, ‘The Cross Thieves,’ and his début, ‘T,’ for the Sydney Review of Books: sydneyreviewofbooks.com/reviews/a-sh.... I thought they were both fantastic examples of what’s happening at the (aesthetic) margins of Australian literature.

Obviously this is excellent, detailed, and in many ways pretty terrifying - essential reading for anyone with even a passing concern for literature, thought, learning etc. I would only add that there is an even broader crisis here around attention. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...

The End of Reading Is Here
Optimists once believed that universal literacy was inevitable. Now it seems that the age of reading might be a short anomaly in human history.

Restacking this one post, but if you click onto it you’ll get a run-down of all the short fiction published so far this year at 3:AM: twenty-odd stories in total. More to come in the second half of the year!

New short fiction at 3:AM Magazine kicked off again this week with a gem from Max Steiner, ‘One Good Look Is What You’re Worth’: www.3ammagazine.com/3am/one-good.... Dark nostalgia (is that a thing?) and kind of a run-on voice that pulls against the wordlessness of the kid at the centre of the piece

Camilla Grudova, ladies and gentlemen:
A page of text reading: “How delicious it would be roasted, the sailors cried, but the captain stopped them: a zoo in Berlin or Moscow would buy the octopus and they would all be rich. In the 200, it would wear a bowtie and make love to women pretending to be mermaids, the captain told his crew, redirecting their appetites. They made eel stew for dinner, and put the octopus in a bucket filled with water, with a lid on top.”

I'd be interested to hear about the best book you read during 2024 that you have not seen widely reviewed or praised, that has gone under the radar. A work that deserves more attention. Newspapers and mags have their end of year round ups coming out and they rarely surprise. Please surprise me.

I'd usually leave this until year's end, but now seems like a good time for it. So here's a look back at short fiction at 3:AM in 2024: one shout-out per day until they're done, with notes on why I went for each piece. First up, J. Billings' 'Automatism': danieldaviswood.substack.com/p/3am-fictio...

An influx of mutuals from that other site on here feels like a freshening breeze. Hopefully more will follow. For sure the old place is beyond hope now. Might as well give this one a go.
