We were a bit early in our predictions but unfortunately quite accurate - we're heading for a world of shortages and we can't manage them with neoliberal state institutions.

Our unions are pushing back against a Labour politician that may try to change a status-quo that has been deeply harmful for workers - all to protect a few jobs in fossil sectors that we cannot afford to keep running because they are literally destroying the planet

it was surprising to hear Unite's Sharon Graham criticize Ed Miliband's record as 'job destroying' climate activism. We hope she reconsiders, on a day where UK is under extreme heat warnings. The climate crisis is real, we need a Chancellor who fights it. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Tightening against an energy price shock is a crude response, that only works if it chokes the economy, and green investment with it. It shouldn't be so controversial for the ECB to accept it.

I've been long skeptical of Kevin Warsh's hawkish aura - yesterday he proved me right. Despite his critique of QE distorting market signals, inflating asset prices, blurring monetary/fiscal lines, the Warsh Fed won't reserve Powell purchases of US Treasuries under cover of 'repo/reserve stability'

In sum, while Bailey's defence has no substance, the real shocking thing is that Labour government lets the Bank get away with such aggressive fiscal policy making for which it has no mandate - cc @zackpolanski.bsky.social
231
Daniela Gabor @danielagabor.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
on impact of gilt sales on yields, Bailey obfuscates badly when claiming that holding or selling gilts has no impact on government's cost of borrowing - when the Bank's own research admits at least 15 basis points, w others up to 70 bp (this means billions of pounds in additional debt service)
131
Daniela Gabor @danielagabor.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
on APF indemnity scheme, Bailey does not recognize that the Bank is unique among rich central banks in passing losses to government. others keep losses on balance sheet until other valuation effects eliminate them. Why? Cause the central bank can bear losses without any macro implications.
241
Daniela Gabor @danielagabor.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
then, two problems with BoE QT (spelled out below) 1. APF Indemnity scheme is uniquely expensive for government (blame Gordon Brown/Mervin King). 2. Active QT - Bank selling gilts - is uniquely expensive for government. How does Bailey deal with these? www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Britain’s politicians need to worry less about the bond markets – and more about the Bank of England | Daniela Gabor
A new model of central banking would weaken the power of bond vigilantes – and help progressive politicians pay for transformative change, says academic Daniela Gabor
143
Daniela Gabor @danielagabor.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
first, the Bank's narrative of QE is no longer New Keynesian price of credit down, but monetarist - QE created more reserves, people had more money to spend (this, reader, matters, cause it's wrong transmission mechanism)
151
Daniela Gabor @danielagabor.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
quite extraordinary that Andrew Bailey has responded to Mehreen Khan (+mine + gilt investors) critique of Bank's Quantitative Tightening with a defense so full of monetarist holes you can drive a plough through them: apparently we are of the mark! why? Bailey won't say!
