Oh look, intensified efforts to build the German derisking state from Germany's investment tsar

in 2017, Haldane gave a Productivity Puzzle speech that does not mention fiscal position once as a possible explanation. by 2026, he's implying surpluses to productivity improvements causality!

In 2022, we warned about the dangers of Housing as an Asset Class in a report for the European Parliament. Lots of wise heads nodded. But here we are again, and we cannot even blame China for this political failure

Our unions are pushing back against a Labour politician that may try to change a status-quo that has been deeply harmful for workers - all to protect a few jobs in fossil sectors that we cannot afford to keep running because they are literally destroying the planet

the short-lived life of a super majority Labour government with BlackRock politics was so obvious even a professor of economics could predict it

I've been long skeptical of Kevin Warsh's hawkish aura - yesterday he proved me right. Despite his critique of QE distorting market signals, inflating asset prices, blurring monetary/fiscal lines, the Warsh Fed won't reserve Powell purchases of US Treasuries under cover of 'repo/reserve stability'

on impact of gilt sales on yields, Bailey obfuscates badly when claiming that holding or selling gilts has no impact on government's cost of borrowing - when the Bank's own research admits at least 15 basis points, w others up to 70 bp (this means billions of pounds in additional debt service)
131
Daniela Gabor @danielagabor.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
on APF indemnity scheme, Bailey does not recognize that the Bank is unique among rich central banks in passing losses to government. others keep losses on balance sheet until other valuation effects eliminate them. Why? Cause the central bank can bear losses without any macro implications.

Daniela Gabor @danielagabor.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
first, the Bank's narrative of QE is no longer New Keynesian price of credit down, but monetarist - QE created more reserves, people had more money to spend (this, reader, matters, cause it's wrong transmission mechanism)
151
Daniela Gabor @danielagabor.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
quite extraordinary that Andrew Bailey has responded to Mehreen Khan (+mine + gilt investors) critique of Bank's Quantitative Tightening with a defense so full of monetarist holes you can drive a plough through them: apparently we are of the mark! why? Bailey won't say!

'government budget is like household budget' is the simple metaphor deployed by people who either lie to justify austerity/capital freedom or have never looked at who owns/trades government debt

the bigger lesson of that @financialtimes.com piece is that financial repression is coming back, and every liberal economist/institution/central bank is quietly panicking.

thanks @benbraun.eurosky.social @realbrianjudge.bsky.social @mkblyth.bsky.social for letting me talk about macrofinancial life of sovereign bonds for 1.5h. judging by this week's OECD conference, next summer school should be for Ministers of Finance (and Gillian Tett)

there is literally no danger of 'Europe resembling China' since China uses heavy financial repression and credit policy as infrastructure for its industrial policy
0182
Daniela Gabor @danielagabor.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
oh look, the derisking state is getting a long @FT read: what it calls 'industrial policy' is really 'carrots for capital policy'. there is not one word on sticks, or capital discipline in this piece. its title should be 'How European capitalists taught Brussels carrots is the way'

reminder that Powell, liberals' hero of central bank independence and Trump bete noire, bought USD 200bn in government bonds since November 2025. Bailey sold £ 5bn in gilts over same period. Only one country has booming stock market on top of price pressures.

well I had no idea - the NYT obituary also mentions a brief stint at Lehman :) while a less sycophant take is that the son went into private equity to develop more sophisticated techniques
