This is one of the things that I love about sequential art: look at how the text is used to show us the exact speed of the depicted sequence of events, just by being split between panels, sort of a still, visual equivalent of the classic slow-motion shot in a film. From #Shredder issue 2.
A six-panel comic spread depicting the Shredder throwing kunai at a trio of gunmen. At the bottom of each panel is a part of the phrase “kill him” (a shouted order from the off-panel boss of the gunmen), showing that the actions depicted all occur in the time it takes to say the phrase.

The hardcover collection of BATMAN/GREEN ARROW/THE QUESTION: ARCADIA is in shops tomorrow 9/23! I’d love to write and draw a follow up series so think about picking this up. The collection is beautifully produced and would look great on your shelf.

This is a really interesting piece and a great example of something that I say often: pop cultural artistic forms can encourage us to think in new and unaccustomed ways and so can be a valuable resource for thinking through philosophical and theological topics.

I, of course, love the monster cuisine anime sub-genre (in addition to finding it an interesting subject for academic research). Foodie Rodtrip combines cozy vibes, an interesting premise, and plenty of charm with the sort of comedic pacing that had people rolling in the aisles.

This is a really interesting thread. It can be easy to view the constant rebooting, spinnings off, and reimaginings that happen in Western-style comics as producing narrative clutter. It is refreshing to consider how all of this can produce a richer, intertwining meta-narrative structure.

Luigi Pareyson, the great father of Italian hermeneutics, writes that Truth can be understood as giving life to a plurality of interpretations. Hence, what makes a work of art Truth-bearing is not an imposition of the universal but rather a capacity to speak to particular moments (even after ages).

Melody Guthrie (Aero) newly resurrected, nude, covered in orange slime, seen from behind standing in front of a crowd of costumed mutants, with Apocalypse’s shadowy outline next to her. Nightcrawler (commenting on the scene via speech boxes) says “How do you describe it? Miraculous?” The next panel shows Nightcrawler and Cyclops in the crowd watching the scene. Nightcrawler continues “….glorious? Wrong?” Cyclops responds “”All I know is you’ve convinced me you are right….” Next panel zooms in on the faces of Cyclops and Nightcrawler as Cyclops continues “….you do have questions.” Nightcrawler responds “Yes. And the only thing I’m sure of is this: any answers I find… I do not think they are for me alone…” The next panel shows Guthrie, still seen from behind, nude, covered in orange slime, now facing apocalypse as Nightcrawler (via a speech box) concludes “…they’re for all of us.”

Comic Studies, at its best, is about more than interrogation of form or textual analysis (as important as those elements are). It provides a much broader and deeper opportunity to confront the tough questions (and invent some new ones!) with and through our favorite stories and characters.
