Again, the lesson for Canada fron the tariffs - but also the EU, the Indo-Pacific and any other region looking to do business with the U.S. - is that the tools have been taken out, this will not end with Trump.
Picture of a tweet of Gavin Newsome saying he won’t necessarily rescind tariffs on Canada or other countries but says he will be nicer.

something I hope we can impart upon young people who live in the effects of gwot but didn't experience its transformations is that the kind of instability and violence unleashed this week has already doomed them to a dramatically more dangerous and circumscribed future, at least IMO

I don’t care if a lot of recruits can’t run a mile but I do care that we don’t seem to have much for young people to dream of and work towards but enactor of state violence or grifter, and even the idea of putting in effort to achieve an outcome feels sour

This a thread about one feature of the Trump Admin's EO regarding the Smithsonian that I haven't seen much explicit discussion of. The stated purpose for reviewing Smithsonian exhibits and collections is to ensure they align with something called "Americanism." That term has a notable genealogy.

New reporting from @jeffhorwitz.bsky.social, who got hold of internal standards for chatbot behavior at Meta.
“It is acceptable to engage a child in conversations that are romantic or sensual,” according to Meta’s “GenAI: Content Risk Standards.” The standards are used by Meta staff and contractors who build and train the company’s generative AI products, defining what they should and shouldn’t treat as permissible chatbot behavior. Meta said it struck that provision after Reuters inquired about the document earlier this month.

What I'm seeing more and more is that AI is somehow worse for the people who use it frequently than I could have anticipated earlier this year, and one of the strongest arguments I can think of against it is what it does to them
The more I see of AI’s effect on society, the more I’m convinced the word to describe its effects is “corrosive”. AI corrodes your skills, it corrodes your ability to think, and through that, it corrodes your humanity. You can use it as a tool, but you have to recognize how dangerous of a tool it can be, because it uses language — it seems like us. But it fundamentally isn’t. It’s seductive to think that life can be easier. It’s easy to believe that you can let a wondrous machine do the hard thinking for you. It’s appealing to feel like you can skip the uncomfortable introspection that creates growth.

if you're reporting on the UCLA shakedown, you should ask the gov. what the legal basis for the $1 billion demand is. if they point to title VI, ask how a billion dollar demand squares with the limited remedies available by law. if they say the False Claims Act, ask which specific contracts.

Again, you cannot unplug 1/4-1/5 of an R1 university's budget & expect the same quantity or quality of "things" on campus. The math simply doesn't work. And pretending it does & we can uphold our "core values," & not talking loudly & publicly about how it doesn't, is not a strategy. It's madness.

Today is a good reminder that during Reconstruction, white southerners penalized freedpersons for being unemployed, unhoused, and destitute—criminalizing access to food, legalizing Black children’s abudction, and restricting Black folks’ freedom of movement— eventually bringing about the 14th Amend.

Bill 33 is probably the most direct attack on university autonomy in Canadian history. The right to select who can attend a university has ALWAYS been in the hands of institutions. Now the government of Ontario wants to change that. A Candian first. And not a very pretty one.
