i've seen the work up close and it is grueling. you're not just a writer, but also your own editor. and your own photo editor. and video editor and cameraperson! you're constantly hustling and still written off as an amateur even if the work is on par with someone with a staff job at a magazine.

the rise of the whole influencer thing is also a direct result of there being fewer jobs in actual media -- but more importantly, there are practically no entry-level media jobs so young scrappy upstarts are basically doing everything on their own and learning that they can actually make a living
