Who Stole My Cheese? 22 Sep, free online Norse laws & sagas reveal a complex world of seasonal & itinerant work. Their stories show how people living on the margins navigated a world structured around belonging – & found inventive ways to survive when they did not #WyrdWednesday #MedievalSky

“This is a tale of Iceland, the isle of stories, and of a thing that befell in the year of the coming there of Christianity” —So begins Robert Louis Stevenson’s short story “The Waif Woman” – unpublished in his lifetime, & found among the papers of his wife after her death in 1914 #WyrdWednesday 💙📚
A copy of a very slim, old, hardback book, with a torn paper cover. The title can just be made out as THE WAIF WOMAN. Below that is the author's name – ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON – and some text:

A folk tale of old Iceland in the author's best manner, which has lately been discovered among the papers of the late Mrs. Stevenson, and is now for the first time issued in book form.

Beneath the text is a large monogram: RLS

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

INSTEAD OF DEPRESSION

try calling it hibernation.
Imagine the darkness is a cave
in which you will be nurtured
by doing absolutely nothing.
Hibernating animals don't even dream.
It's okay if you can't imagine
spring. Sleep through the alarm
of the world. Name your hopelessness
a quiet hollow, a place you go
to heal, a den you dug,
Sweetheart, instead
of a grave.

Circulating this news on the copyright to John Clare's works again, because it doesn't seem to be as well known among Romantic-period scholars, editors and anthologisers, as it should. The copyright claim is dead.

For those London based or within easy commute, I will speaking about Grief and Terror in Victorian child bereavement (literature, folklore, culture) at the fabulous Brompton Cemetery at 1.30pm on 17th October for #LondonMonthoftheDead Not a cheery talk, I know, but hopefully of interest!
How were children remembered and idealised in Victorian cemeteries, consolation literatures, illustration, and fiction? Then, as now, the death of a child was considered a "peculiar sorrow", the greatest tragedy and, for Edith Nesbit, "the pain awoke that is never dead". This period saw the most widespread extravagant glorifications of the lost child - immortalised as the most beautiful and innocent demographic, assured of Heaven in a way that refuted centuries of gloomy uncertainty. Tombstones, eulogies, effigies, illustrations, diary entries, poems, prose fictions, post-mortem photography; the ways in which the dead child could be captured, recorded, memorialised in all its glory increased exponentially.

Yet the exaltations of the period were matched by the deepest and most fervent expressions of terror not only for the child in death but of the child: Folk tales of pitiful child ghosts transformed into literary accounts of vengeful spirits and revenant bodies.

This talk examines various examples from the "cult of child death" from the cemetery to the page, from folklore to literature, from high theology to popular religions, from the celebrated to the feared in Anglophone cultures.

Tickets £13.50 including a delightful gin cocktail and a 20% donation to Brompton Cemetery

Trollope's satire exposes how easily integrity can be sacrificed for social position and financial gain, while his characters provide rich reflections on conscience, responsibility, and the consequences of moral compromise.
