New record year for renewable electricity in Britain - thanks especially to strong solar output. Read our analysis of 2025 here www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Two part graphic showing the daily contribution of solar in Great Britain’s electricity. The top half is a single tile chart arranged in 30-minute blocks from midnight on left to 23:59 on right with each row representing one day and ordered top-to-bottom from 1 January to 31 December 2025. Blocks are shaded by strength of generation share. In 2025, more than a dozen blocks are dark orange to show share above 40 percent. Contribution in summer days is longer and generally stronger than in winter. The second part of the graphic repeats the format as a small multiple with one fart for each year from 2013 to 2024. Each year increases in strength over that period but 2025 is the greatest contributor overall.

Out of curiosity, I made a notebook that turns an image into a csv grid and visualises it with gridviz, allowing you to manipulate each pixel: observablehq.com/d/0a51240cfc... Not that useful, but I thought it looked cool!

Playing around some more with Eurostat's flight data: observablehq.com/@eurostat-ws... Some interesting discoveries when calculating the difference between 'passengers carried' and 'seats available'. We can visualize 'empty seats' and '% of seats that are empty'. To be continued...
Between Oslo and Stockholm there were 2.2 million passengers carried and a total 3.7 million seats available, meaning that 1.4 million (or 40%) of the seats were unoccupied.Between Frankfurt and Milan there were 989 thousand passengers carried and a total 1.5 million seats available, meaning that around 500 thousand (or 35%) of the seats were unoccupied.

Map showing air passengers carried from the EU to outside the EU in 2024, and their change compared to 2023.
A world map visualising extra-EU air passenger transport in 2024. Flows extend from the EU to major global regions, with line thickness representing passengers carried and line colour showing percentage increase from 2023. Europe except EU is the largest flow at 295 million passengers. Other notable flows include Northern America 61M, North Africa 47M, Western Asia 45M, Rest of Africa 13M, South America 16M, Central America and Caribbean 10M, Eastern Asia 17M, South-Eastern Asia 6M, Southern Asia 4M, Central Asia 669k, and Oceania 294k.

Hi! I made a wordle-like game where you guess the country based on stats! joewdavies.github.io/statle/ Let me know what you think!
A screenshot of the Statle game interface. The top navigation bar shows icons for rules, stats, GitHub, and dark-mode toggle, with the STATLE logo in the center. Below, the heading reads “Guess today's country!”. A Clues card shows “2 / 16 clues” revealed, listing Population: 34,231,700 and GDP per capita: $11,867. Underneath is a country search bar with a Submit button. The first guess, “Madagascar,” appears in the table with distance 6,557 km, a northeast arrow indicating direction, and 67% proximity. The next row shows “Guess 2 / 6” awaiting input, with empty rows below.
