Read around! Last night I had a breakthrough with my PhD. Chatting to a colleague from another department a few days ago, the colleague recommended some academic articles from a totally different field. As I read last night, I got excited, because I gained answers to nagging questions I had.

Perhaps overdoing the research for my writing? I'm researching the weather and cloud cover for a particular location on a particular date to work out if the Sun is likely to have been shining through the window at the time for a scene in my novel.

A two-part story, from love to tragedy, told in only six words. An unknown graffiti artist upstages Hemingway's six-word story. #narrative #graffiti
Graffiti on a wooden wall, inside a roughly drawn heart. The text reads: Keven love you stupid ass bitch. The first two words are crossed out. Stupid ass bitch is written in slightly different coloured ink, revealing it to be a later inscription.

Breast cancer diagnoses rose by over 300% between 1973 and 1992. Was there a breast cancer epidemic?! NO. Mammograms were implemented for screening in 1976. PREVALENCE is a function of being able to correctly diagnose something. This is also about autism.

Etymology of the day: ‘book’ comes from an ancient root shared by ‘beech’, a wood that people used for engraving inscriptions. ‘Paper’ comes from ‘papyrus’, and ‘volume’ is from the Latin for a ‘roll’ of parchment. Happy World Book Day.

I just saw the Zelenskyy Trump meeting on the news. President Zelenskyy was a true, calm diplomat up against a childish dotard. Trump (a convicted felon and adjudicated rapist) is truly a good Russian agent. Putin will be proud of Agent Krasnov standing up for Moscow. May God be with Ukraine tonight

I decided to reply to Elon Musk's email thusly:
I decided to reply to Elon Musk's email thusly:

Hello,

I have been asked to email Elon Musk five things that I accomplished last week. It wasn't specified whether responses were limited only to US Federal employees, so I thought I should reply anyway. As I answer to none but myself in this regard, I am not copying in any manager.

1. I did my best.
2. I had a good long think about, if Charles Dickens had been born a century later, whether he would have been involved in writing soap operas. I daresay he would.
3. I became more resolute that abandoning my account on Twitter was a good idea; likewise I reaffirmed my decision to never buy a Tesla.
4. I donated to a charity for transgender youth, because your daughter Vivian Jenna Wilson is a heroine to so many, having to put up with the horror of having you for a biological parent.
5. I had a discussion with my teenager child about European politics, and my child came to the conclusion that the AfD is a dangerous organisation.

I hope this satiates your infuriating nosiness. Please reach out if you have any further questions, as I will enjoy replying to them in a condescending manner. Please have Grok filter this email to the top of your pile so that you may fleetingly know of the contempt people feel for you.

Yours eyerollingly,

Damon Lord

The measles outbreak in Texas is reminding me of the public letter Roald Dahl wrote about losing his daughter to measles in 1962, just before the vaccine was publicly available.
Excerpt from a public letter Roald Dahl wrote encouraging people to vaccinate their children.

Olivia, my eldest daughter, caught measles when she was seven years old. As the illness took its usual course I can remember reading to her often in bed and not feeling particularly alarmed about it. Then one morning, when she was well on the road to recovery, I was sitting on her bed showing her how to fashion little animals out of coloured pipe-cleaners, and when it came to her turn to make one herself, I noticed that her fingers and her mind were not working together and she couldn’t do anything.

“Are you feeling all right?” I asked her.

“I feel all sleepy,” she said.

In an hour, she was unconscious. In twelve hours she was dead.

The measles had turned into a terrible thing called measles encephalitis and there was nothing the doctors could do to save her. That was twenty-four years ago in 1962, but even now, if a child with measles happens to develop the same deadly reaction from measles as Olivia did, there would still be nothing the doctors could do to help her.

On the other hand, there is today something that parents can do to make sure that this sort of tragedy does not happen to a child of theirs. They can insist that their child is immunized against measles. I was unable to do that for Olivia in 1962 because in those days a reliable measles vaccine had not been discovered. Today a good and safe vaccine is available to every family and all you have to do is to ask your doctor to administer it.
